EXPORT DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

Export Development Authority

Export Development Authority (EDA), a Statutory Body under


the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India . to ensure sound
development of export trade of India through Quality Control and

Inspection and for matters connected therewith.


The Authority is entrusted with the primary task of promoting and
developing industry with special reference to exports.

The authority has formulated under a network of thirty eight sub offices
and laboratories located at different ports or major industrial centers to
back up the pre-shipment inspection and certification activities.

Marine Products Export Development Authority [ MPEDA]

The Marine Products Export Development Authority was set up as a

Statutory Body in 1972 under an Act of Parliament (No.13 of 1972).


The Authority, with its headquarters at Kochi and field offices in all the
Maritime States of India, is headed by a Chairman.

The Authority is responsible for development of the marine industry with


special focus on marine exports.

Authority are to promote and develop quality of Marine products


specifically for exports through disbursement of subsidies.
The authority has formulated 58 sub schemes under six major heads
namely:

Marketing

Capture fisheries

Culture fisheries

Processing infrastructure & value addition

Quality control

Research and Development.

Objectives of the Authority


The Authority is entrusted with the primary task of promoting
and developing marine products industry with special
reference to exports.
In order to achieve the primary objective the Authority is
required to undertake the following measures:
To develop and regulate deep sea and off shore fishing and
undertake measures for Conservation of marine resources;
To register fishing vessels, Processing plants, Storage
plants etc.;

To render financial or other assistance to the owners of


(i) fishing vessels engaged in off-shore and deep-sea fishing
(ii) processing
To carry out inspection in any fishing vessel, processing plant
etc.;
To collect statistics from persons engaged in catching of fish or
other marine products, owners of processing plants,
storage premises etc.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export


Development Authority was set up in 1986 as a Statutory Body
under an Act of Parliament of 1986.

The Authority, with its headquarters at New Delhi, is headed by


a Chairman.
The Authority has five Regional Offices at Guwahati,

Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore & Mumbai.

APEDA entrusted with the task of promoting agricultural exports,


including the export of processed foods in value added form.
APEDA has also been entrusted with monitoring of export of non-

scheduled products such as Basmati Rice, Wheat and Coarse Grains


. Import of sugar is also monitored by APEDA

It takes a comprehensive vision about a particular


produce/ product integrating all the activities involved right from
production to the market.
It involves developing and sourcing the raw materials, their
processing/ packaging and other activities till the final exports.

ASSIGNED FUNCTIONS
In accordance with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export
Development AuthorityAct, 1985, (2 of 1986) the following functions have
been assigned to the Authority
Development of industries relating to the scheduled products for export
by way of providing financial assistance or otherwise for undertaking
surveys and feasibilitystudies, participation in enquiry capital through joint
ventures and other reliefs andsubsidy schemes.
Registration of persons as exporters of the scheduled products on
payment of such fees asmay be prescribed.

Fixing of standards and specifications for the scheduled products for the
purpose of exports.
Carrying out inspection of meat and meat products in slaughter houses,
processing plants,storage premises, conveyances or other places where
such products are kept or handledfor the purpose of ensuring
the quality of such products.
Improving of packaging of the Scheduled products; Improving of

marketing of theScheduled products outside India


Promotion of export oriented production and development of the
Scheduled products

Collection of statistics from the owners of factories or establishments


engaged in the production, processing, packaging, marketing or export of
the scheduled products or from such other persons as may be prescribed
on any matter relating to the scheduled products and publication of the

statistics so collected or of any portions thereof or extracts there from.


Training in various aspects of the industries connected with the scheduled
products; Suchother matters as may be prescribed
