1. INTRODUCTION
Abstract: This project is about the effect of water content on the most crude oil
properties (density and viscosity) measured in the field. In the oil field, the limit of
basic sediment and water (BS&W) content has been set to below than 1.0% as the
water content is below the limit, it will represent the dry oil properties. This project
is conducted to investigate on the various percentage of water content effect to the
crude oil properties stated. The coulemetric Karl Fischer Titration is used as it has high
precision and accuracy in determining the percentage of water content. The expected
result from this project is the real values for the two crude oil properties when tested
with different percentage of water content with different type of crude oils (Dulang and
Castella). These values will be able to represent the crude oil properties in the field if
the experiment is successful.
Problem Statement
The water content in the experiment conducted in laboratory for density and viscosity
measurement is less than 1.0%. However, the crude oil received from the separator
normally much higher than that, around 3-5% more. Thus, all samples are required to
be sent to the lab to find the real density and viscosity of the crude oil which consume
a lot of cost and time.
Objectives
To investigate the water content effect on density and viscosity of crude oil
To investigate the degree of error contributed by water content to different types of
crude oil

At the end of this experiment, a lot of new data about the crude oil properties at different
percentage of the crude oil will be obtained. The limitation in determining the
measurement of viscosity and density of crude oil which is water content of less than
1.0% can be increased further. A new type of formula can be made to find the desired
value of the properties within the range of the experiment conducted, thus will be able to
avoid time wasting and budget.
