MODELLING AND ANALYSIS OF SWEPT

BACK WING

ABSTRACT
Our aim is to study on the swept back wing of an aircraft in which
computational analysis will be done under supersonic conditions.
Here Analysis for the supersonic flow over the swept back wing at
different swept back angle will be carried out and coefficient of
lift, coefficient of drag , critical mach no which are evaluated in the
supersonic condition . Our primary aim of this work is to conduct a
simple experiment which will demonstrate the effect of sweep
direction on the aerodynamic characteristic of several wing plan
form .
Here Aspect ratio, Taper ratio , Geometric incidence ,airfoil section
remain unchanged and only the swept back angle changes

Introduction & Literature review

The concept of swept back wing was introduce by
German aeronautical engineer , but it doesnt come
into existence until end of the World War II.
Dr. Adolf Busemann suggest the use of swept back
wing for supersonic flights at Volta conference
meeting in 1935
This concept come into existence in late 1950s and
early 1960s .
The concept of swept back wing was successfully
tested on messerschmitt Me 262, The first
operational jet fighter craft.

When the designer face the challenge against

multi role aircraft ,for a wing design at a high
speed , therefore swept back wing come as a
possible solution.
As the speed of the aircraft increases,
turbulence and drag also increases as a result
of air friction on the wing .
Sweep theory is an aeronautical engineering
description of the behavior of airflow over a
wing, when the leading edge of wing
encounter the flow at an oblique angle

Sweep theory gives the concept of drag

divergence at high speed and the critical
mach number .
Sweeping the wings of aircraft delays the drag
divergence mach number.

Why Sweptback Wing?

To increase the critical mach number.

To reduce the drag.
Increase the lateral stability.
Less turbulence when speed abruptly
changes.

Air velocity is splits into

two components, 1st
velocity components that
is along the wing has no
effect on the wing , 2nd
velocity component that
is perpendicular to the
wing has only the effect
on the wing , so aircraft
can fly at much higher
speed.

Increase in critical mach number

The effect of swept
back on the Critical
mach number of finite
Wing
is
usually
analyzed in term Of
wing of given aspect
ratio
And
airfoil
thickness ratio in the
Free stream direction.

Reduction in drag
As we
increase the
sweep back
angle drag
reduces at
high-speed
condition.

Increase in lateral stability

If one wing lowers
in a slip, the angle
of attack on the low
wing increases,
producing greater
lift. This results in a
tendency for the
lower wing to rise,
and return the
airplane to level
flight.

Disadvantages of sweepback
As increase in
sweep angle
we have
lower lift
coefficient at
high speed
due to spanwise flow.

Span-wise flow

Airfoil Selection & Wing Design

This section of our study deal with the process
of preliminary wing design and airfoil
selection.
Fig. illustrates the various elements of wing
design that were decided based upon the
particular criteria.

The airfoil selection is based upon

two prime considerations for airfoil
section.
i. Critical mach number
ii. Stalling angle

Wing design flowchart

Choice of airfoil

Currently the selected

airfoil is a natural laminar
flow airfoil and it is
modified based on Dr.
Richard Whitcomb
research to be a
supercritical airfoil. The
supercritical airfoil will
delay the mach drag rise
and increase lift.

Purpose
The primary purpose of this project is to
investigate and summarize the effects of
variable sweep.
This project is focused on analytical studies
based on following.
i. Modeling
ii. 3-D computational fluid dynamics analysis
