EER based on tests done in accordance to MS ISO 5151:2004

Tests can be either the Balanced Type Calorimeter or

Psychometric type.
Tested capacity value must be at least 90% of that declared

by the manufacturer.

EER is calculated as shown below:

For inverter air conditioner

Efficiency of air conditioners rated by the SEER.

The SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output during a

typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy

input during the same period.
The higher the unit's SEER rating the more energy efficient
In the U.S., the SEER is the ratio of cooling in British thermal

unit (BTU) to the energy consumed in watt-hours.

The coefficient of performance or COP is a ratio of heating or

cooling provided to electrical energy consumed.

Higher COPs equate to lower operating costs.
COP is highly dependent on operating conditions, especially

absolute temperature and relative temperature between sink

and system, and is often graphed or averaged against
expected conditions.

Energy efficiency is defined as the energy service per unit of

energy consumption.
For example, an air conditions efficiency is the amount of

cooling capacity (output) per unit of energy it consumes

(input).
Standard star rating system has a minimum of 1 star and a

maximum of 6.

Calculate the power consumption of 5000 Btu/h room air

conditioner with an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 8. Then,
convert EER to COP.

An old room air conditioner with an EER 6 was replaced by a

new air conditioner with an EER of 10. The power
consumption of the old air conditioner was 1000 W. Calculate
the power consumption of new air conditioner.

Output cooling power is 6000 Btu/h.

The size of room is not changing, so even the air conditioner

is replaced with a new one with EER of 10, it is still pulling out
6000 Btu/hr.

()
Power consumption of new air con is 600 Watts.
What we are doing here is, by replacing the old air conditioner
which used to consume 1000 watts with this new air
conditioner which has an EER of 10, we are reducing the
power consumption to 600 watts.

This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Working Group

on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for Air

Conditioners under the authority of the Industry Standards
Committee on Electrical and Electronics Equipments and
Accessories.
MEPS for electrical appliances have been introduced to

Malaysian market since 2009. Since then, development has been

carried out by Suruhanjaya Tenaga to put MEPS requirement in
the Electricity Regulation 1994.

This Malaysian Standard specifies minimum energy performance

standard (MEPS) and energy labelling requirements for singlephase non-ducted single split wall mounted type vapour
compression air conditioners with cooling capacity up to 7.1 kW.

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)

Ratio of the total cooling capacity to the effective
power input at any given set of rating conditions. The
unit is (Btu/h)/W.
Minimum Energy Performance Standards

(MEPS)

The minimum level of energy efficiency which has to be

met by each of applicable air conditioners.

Star rating
The number of stars displayed on the energy label.
Available stars are between a minimum of one and a
maximum of five.

Inverter air conditioners

Air conditioners employ technologies that vary the

output of the compressor, by means other than startstop operation.

Non inverter air conditioners
Air conditioners employ technologies that control the
output of the compressor by start-stop operation.

LG Energy Star 8,000-BTU 115V Window-Mounted Air Conditioner

Electricity consumption (kWh) = 677.97W x 10 hours /
1000 = 6.8 kWh
For 1 month:
Electricity consumption (kWh) = 6.8 kWh * 30 days =
204 kWh

Charge for first 200 kWh = 200 * RM 0.218 = RM 43.60

Charge for remaining 4 kWh= 4 * RM 0.334 = RM 1.336
Charge for 1 month = RM 43.60 + RM 1.336 = RM 45

Frigidaire FRA083AT7 8,000 BTU 115-Volt Window-Mounted

Mini-Compact Air Conditioner
Electricity consumption (kWh) = 740.74W x 10 hours /
1000 = 7.4 kWh
For 1 month:
Electricity consumption (kWh) = 7.4 kWh * 30 days =
222 kWh

Charge for first 200 kWh = 200 * RM 0.218 = RM 43.60

Charge for remaining 22 kWh= 22 * RM 0.334 = RM
7.348

Charge for 1 month = RM 43.60 + RM 7.348 = RM 51

BTUs: The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in

British thermal units per hour (Btu/hr). Find the best BTUs
needed to cool the room.

Energy Star rating: The Environmental Protection Agency's

Energy Star ratings indicate that an appliance is at least 10

percent more energy-efficient than the minimum federal
standards.

EER: A room air conditioner's EER, or Energy-Efficiency Ratio, is

the ratio of the cooling output divided by the unit's power

consumption. The higher the EER, the more efficient the model.

Anti-Microbial filter? Most room air conditioners come with

reusable electrostatic filters, which may be treated with triclosan.

If purchasing a unit with an antimicrobial filter, ask the retailer
to replace it with an untreated electrostatic filter.
