POLLUTION

INTRODUCTION- POLLUTION

REFERS TO THE OCCURRENCE OF

AN UNWANTED CHANGE IN THE
ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE OF THE
ACTION OR PRESENCE OF A
POLLUTANT. IT PRODUCES IMPURE,
DIRTY OR UNCLEAN
OBJECTIONABLE CONDITIONS
WHICH AFFECT ADVERSELY ANY
USE OF THE ENVIRONMENT BY THE
ORGANISMS.

TYPES OF POLLUTION
AIR

SOIL

POLLUTION

WATER

NOISE

AIR POLLUTION
AIR POLLUTION MAY BE DEFINED AS
IMPURE, FOUL OR UNCLEAN
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS DUE TO
PRESENCE OR ACTIVITIES OF
POLLUTANTS THAT PRODUCE
UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS ON HUMAN
AND HIS ENVIRONMENT.

TYPES OF AIR POLLUTION

OUTDOOR

INDOOR

wATER POLLUTION
WATER POLLUTION REFERS TO
DEGRADATION OF WATER QUALITY
AND MAY BE DEFINED AS ANY
PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL AND
BIOLOGICAL CHANGE ON WATER Q UALIETY BY OTHER SUBSTANCES
THAT ADVERSELY AFFECT LIVING
ORGANISMS.

TYPES OF WATER POLLUTION

SURFACE
WATER

MARINE

GROUND
WATER

SOIL POLLUTION
SOIL POLLUTION MAY BE DEFINED AS
ANY SUBSTANCE CAPABLE OF
CHANGING THE PHYSICAL,
CHEMICAL OR BIOLOGICAL
CHARACETRISTICS OF SOIL TO
MAKE THEM INACTIVE AND
INTERFERE WITH THE QUALITY OF
CROP WHICH ADVERSELY AFFECTS
HUMANS AND OTHER ANIMALS.

NOISE POLLUTION
NOISE IS COMMONLY DEFINED AS
UNWANTED SOUND THAT CAN
PRODUCE AN UNDESIRABLE
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT IN AN
INDIVIDUAL.

POLLUTANTS
A SUBSTANCE OR EFFECT
INTRODUCED INTO THE
ENVIRONMENT IN SIGNIFICANT
AMOUNTS IN SOLID, SEMI SOLID,
LIQUID, GAS OR SUB MOLECULAR
PARTICLES FORM WHICH HAS A
DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE
ENVIRONMENT AND THEREFROM
THE LIVING ORGANISMS
INCLUDING HUMAN BEINGS IS
CALLED POLLUTANTS.

MAJOR POLLUTANTS

Effects of pollutants
EFFECTS ON HEALTH-

1) SULPHATES ACTS AS IRRITANTS

THAT DAMAGES DELICATE
TISSUES IN THE EYES AND
RESPIRATORY PASSAGES.
2) THE FINE SUSPENDED PARTICULE
MATTER PENETRATE DEEP INTO
THE LUNGS AND ARE BOTH
IRRITANTS AND FIBROTIC.
3) OTHER POLLUTANTS CAUSES
HEADACHES, DIZZINESS, FLUOROSIS, CANCER, ASBESTOSIS,etc.

Effects on environment
1) PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG IS
CAUSED BY POLLUTANTS.
2) ACID RAIN, GREEN HOUSE EFFECT,
FOREST DAMAGE,
EUTROPHICATION,
BIOMAGNIFICATION, etc.

Abatement of pollution
1) BY CREATING PUBLIC AWARENESS

2) BY MODERN EQUIPMNTS LIKE

GRAVITATIONAL SETTLING
CHAMBER, CYCLONE SEPARATORS,
ELECTROSTATIC
PRECIPITATORS,WET SCRUBBERS,

etc.
3) BY DEVELOPING GREEN BELT.
4) BY WASTE TREATMENT METHOD.
