Do Now 5 Minutes

Elsa and John are competing in a 2015

track race. Elsa runs at a rate of 464
feet/8 minutes. John runs at a rate of
348 feet/6 minutes. Who runs faster?

A) John

B) Elsa

C) Neither

NOT sugar cookies?

Lesson Overview

Welcome back!

Today well spend some time reviewing some of the things we learned
about positive and negative integers last year.

Afterwards, we will focus a lot more on comparing integers, ordering

integers, and a new topic, absolute value.

Mr. Es Guess My Number Game 4 minutes

I am going to be thinking of a number.

You may only ask me 3 questions

before guessing the number.

You must raise your hand and wait to

be called in order to ask a question.

A) I am thinking of a number between 0

and -7. What is my number?

B) I am thinking of a NON-integer

between and . What is my number?

C) I am thinking of a NON-integer

NEGATIVE rational number between - 8

and -

What is my number?

Larger or Smaller? 3 minutes

B

A) Mr. Campbell says to Mr. E B is larger than A. Is he correct? How do

you know?

B) Mr. E says that Z is larger than D. Is he correct? How do you know?

Ordering in Word Problems 5 min

1) The record low temperatures for a town in New York for January are 34F and in February -25F. Order the temperatures from least to greatest.

2) On a Wednesday January the temperature was -10F. One month later

in February, the temperature increased 25 degrees. What was the new
temperature? Order the temperatures from least to greatest.

3) Johns time for running the mile in gym class is 9.2 minutes. Elsas time
is 9.18 minutes. Who ran the mile in less time? Order the numbers from
least to greatest.

Ordering in Word Problems II 5 min

1) Ms. Cave teachers at P.S. 178 in Brooklyn. She gives bonus points on tests for
clear answers, and deducts points for unclear answers. She wrote the following on
students papers:

Student A: -2 points, Student B: -2.5 points. Did student A or student B perform worse
on the test?

2) A piranha is swimming approximately 5

feet beneath the waters surface and a

flounder is swimming approximately 3 feet beneath the waters surface. Which fish
3
is swimming further beneath the waters surface?

3) Mr. Dunne, Mr. E and Mr. Campbell are playing a card game. The object of the
game is to finish with the most points. The scores at the end of the game are:

Mr. E: -5, Mr. Campbell: -7, Mr. Dunne: 0.

Who won the game? Who came in last place? Order the numbers from least to
greatest and explain how you know.

Ordering in Word Problems II 5 min

1) Mr. Dunne, Mr. E and Mr. Campbell played another round of their card game. This time,
the scores were different:

Mr. E: -1, Mr. Campbell: -2, Mr. Dunne: -4. Who won? Who came in last place?

2) In VSC Math, two students are debating the relationship between rational numbers. Read
their claims below, then write an explanation of who is correct and how you know.

Student As claim: I know that 3 is greater than 2 2. So, -3 must be greater than - 22.

Student Bs claim: Yes, 3 is greater than 2

, but when you look at their opposites, their

order will be opposite. So that means -2 2 is greater than -3.

What is the value of each number?

Which number is larger?

5 Minutes!

I will think of two numbers.

I will give you clues to help you find out what numbers I am thinking of.

Your role is to determine the value of each number and state which one is greater!

Use the number line diagram below to help you! Four rounds!
