Definition

It is an electronic equipment and helps to

solve problems, store information and
generate report.
"computer" is a collection of devices that
function as a unit.
The most basic collection includes a
Computer CPU, a Monitor, a Keyboard,
and a Mouse.

Structure of computer
It consist of (a) Hard ware (b) Soft ware
(a) Hard ware:
It is like the brain and nerves in man
The electronic brain that controls a
computer is made from tiny chips of
silicon
These microchips contain up to 2,50.000
parts that instruct how to work
The components that can be felt
physically are the hard ware.

Components of Hard ware

1. Mother Board:
A main board of the
computer that has many
chips on it.
The motherboard
makes the computer
work.
It also is where the
memory and the
processing are found.

It contains the processing unit and all the

controllers required to control the various
input and output devices.
There are several expansion cards each
card has a special purpose.
Ex: Sound card contains special control for
sound.
video card handles graphics that displayed
on monitor.

Chip- A small piece

inside the computer
that
helps your
computer
work. Chips have
to be
programmed by
people or they
won't work.
There are many
chips in a
computer.

Processing unit
It is located in the mother
board
It process the input given
to the computer and
displays the processed
information through
various output devices.
CPU (Central Processing
Unit) A chip that is the "brains"
of your computer t
hat processes the
information.

The Monitor
The Computer Monitor is the computer user's
window into the workings of the computer.
It consists of a television picture tube that had
been modified to accept the type of video signal
created by the computer's electronics.
Conventional televisions can be used as
computer monitors if a translation device is used
to connect them.
The picture quality leaves something to be
desired.

Monitors- a monitor
is the screen on
computer

The Keyboard

Keyboard-a keyboard is
a tool that is used for
typing like a typewriter.

The Keyboard is the

primary input device
used to communicate
with the computer.
A computer keyboard
closely resembles a
conventional typewriter
keyboard with the
addition of numerous
keys that are used
specifically for
computing functions.

The Mouse
Named for the resemblance of the wire coming
out of it and a mouse's tail,
the mouse was introduced to computing in the
early 1980's when Macintosh created its
graphical user interface (GUI).
The mouse is another input device used to point
at objects on the computer monitor and select
them.
Using the mouse and keyboard in combination
allows the computer user substantial latitude in
how to accomplish a wide variety of tasks.

Hard Drive-hard drives are machines that

have alot of memory to save your work
and carries a c.d.rom and a floppy disk.

The Floppy Diskette Drive

Once the most advanced of storage
devices, floppy diskettes are
normally used a temporary storage
containers or transportation media
for data.
A standard floppy diskette can hold
1.44 MB of computer data.
This amounts to a rather large
number of pages if translated to the
paper standard for textual
information.
Computer diskettes are not as
Disk-a disk is a
reliable or fast as the internal
piece of plastic that
storage drives on the computer.
holds information
They are also the primary vector of
for or from your
virus infection in the computer world.
computer.

The CD-ROM Drive

C.D.-a round
circle holds
information for
or from your
computer

This modern miracle gained

prominence in the late 1980's and
has become the primary
distribution medium for software to
consumers.
The Compact Disk-Read Only
Memory (CD-ROM) disk itself is a
collection of concentric circles
containing millions of pits and
plateaus which correspond to
on/off bits of data.
The disk is read with an optical
laser similar to the one used to
scan your groceries at the
supermarket.

Most disks of this kind are "Read Only"

meaning that the computer can retrieve
information from the disk, but cannot place
information on it.
New developments have improved this
technology to allow writing and rewriting
data to the disk.
A different kind of hardware mechanism is
needed to employ this innovation.

Computer Peripherals
Computer peripherals are any electronic devices
that can be hooked up to a computer other than
the standard input-output devices (monitor,
keyboard,mouse).
Peripheral devices include
speakers,
microphones,
printers,
scanners,
digital cameras,
plotters, and modems.

Peripherals often require special software

packages called "drivers". These drivers
are usually included with the peripheral at
purchase time.

Printer- A machine that puts things

from the computer onto paper.

Scanner- A piece of equipment that c

opies pictures so that you can use it in
your computer projects.

Speakers- The part of the computer that lets you

hear the sounds from the programs.

Definitions :

Virus- A software that damages your computer

system
Color Cartridges- a color cartridge is the thing
that holds the ink for your computer's printer.
World Wide WebA part of the internet that let's you jump from
site to site alot quicker.

Modem- A part of the computer that

connects to the phone lines so that you
can go on the Internet.
