What we have learned

Basic knowledge
Chapter 1,3
Matter, charge and electrostatic interaction
Manipulating units in calculation
Understand and use Mole, and Molarity
Balancing equations
Stoichiometry (limiting reactant, theoretical
yield, etc.)

Properties of atoms and bondings

Chapter 2, 6, 7, 8, 11.1-11.2
Atomic structure and basic properties such
as atomic number, weight, charge of ions etc.
Electronic configuration (orbitals, quantum
numbers, noble gas core and valence
electrons.
Trends in Periodic Table (Groups and
Periods): Effective Nuclear Charge, size, ionization
energy, electron affinity, electron negativity.

Properties of atoms and bondings

Chapter 2, 6, 7, 8, 11.1-11.2
Linkage between chemical bonding and
properties of elements (electronic
structure). Lewis structures and Octet
Rule, formal charge, polarity etc. Bond
energy, order and length etc.
Other concept and knowledge including,
intermolecular forces.

Chemical reactions of elements:

Chapter 4
Feel comfortable with REACTION.
Exchange reaction, acid base reaction, and
oxidation reduction.
Calculate and use oxidation number.
Reactivity trend of different groups in the periodic
table. (Metallic and nonmetallic chemical
properties)
Know common differences between metals and
nonmetals especially the reactivity. Know some
common reactions of metal and non metals in
different groups (reactions with water and oxygen)

Thermal Chemistry: Chapter 5, 8.8,

15,
Chemical dynamics: chapter 5, 8.8.
Chemical equilibrium: chapter 15.
Dynamics: E, H, w, q, state function, First
Law, Hess Law)
Enthalpy H, (e.g. formation enthalpy, bond
enthalpy.) and calculation of the change
after a reaction or process. Use Hess Law
to calculate the reaction enthalpy.

Thermal Chemistry: Chapter 5, 8.8,

15
Concept of reaction rate.
Equilibrium: Feature of the chemical equilibrium
and equilibrium constant. what will affect
equilibrium. Le Chateliers principle.
Equilibrium constant K and quotient Q, calculations
based on concentration and explain the result of
calculations. (use experimental data to calculate K
and use K to calculate concentrations.)

Keys to prepare the final

Read and understand all the slides. If cannot
remember the explanation, 1st, check textbook,
2nd, ask me or TA.
Redo all the examples, quizzes and homework
in the slides.
Redo all the exams carefully, make sure that you
really understand each of question (especially
those concept questions, discuss with your
classmates, or ask me or TA.
