STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE
WITH SEA SAND AS FINE AGGREGATE
SECOND REVIEW
SARITHA. V
M.E, STRUCTURAL-FINAL YEAR
UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF
Mr. MURUGESH.V,M.E.
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Department of civil engineering JCT CET

Objective of testing
The main objective of testing was to know
the suitability of the materials to be used
in concrete with sea sand as fine
aggregate
The main parameters studied here are for
the materials used for casting concrete
samples
The materials used for casting concrete
samples along with tested results are
described.

MATERIALS TO BE TESTED
1)CEMENT
2)FINE AGGREGATE
3)COARSE AGGREGATE

cement
IS mark 43 grade cement (Brand-ACC
cement) was used for all concrete
mixes.
The cement used was fresh and
without any lumps. Testing of cement
was done as per IS:
8112-1989 [26].
The cement used was similar to Type I
cement (ASTM C 150).

TESTS CONDUCTED ON CEMENT

Coarse aggregates
Locally available coarse aggregates having the
maximum size of 10 mm and 20mm were used
in the present work.
The 10mm aggregates used were first sieved
through 10mm sieve and then through 4.75
mm sieve and 20mm aggregates were firstly
sieved through 20mm sieve. They were then
washed to remove dust and dirt and were dried
to surface dry condition.
The aggregates were tested per Indian
Standard Specifications IS: 383-1970 [27].

FINE AGGREGATE
Sea sand is used as fine aggregate
The sand was first sieved through
4.75 mm sieve to remove any
particles greater than 4.75 mm and
then was washed to remove the dust.
The fine aggregates were tested per
Indian Standard Specifications IS:
383-1970 [27].

Advantages and Disadvantages of Sea Sand

ADVANTAGES
It is the cheapest form of fine aggregate
In contrast to crushed fine aggregate, it is more rounded
or cubical like river sand and hence, demand for water
and cement is low Price
As it is found in natural deposits grading of sea sand is
generally good
Grading of sea sand is finer than that of river sand and
since local crushed stone coarse aggregate is coarser, it
does not show any adverse effects when used in concrete

DISADVANTAGES

It may lead to efflorescence and

corrosion of reinforcement
If washing is necessary, it may be an
additional burden
Offshore sand facility will require a
large capital investment
