JET PUMP AND

ELECTROMAGNETIC
PUMP

JET PUMPS
Are

a class of liquid handling device

that makes use of the momentum of
one fluid to move another.

Jet pumps are of many types but

in this field, we will just focus on
two
types:
EJECTOR
AND
INJECTOR.

EJECTOR
Also

called siphon, exhauster or

eductor.
Its operation is based on the Bernoulli
Principle which states that:
When the pressure in a fluid
decreases, the speed of the fluid
increases and vice versa.

HOW DO EJECTORS
WORK?

1.The pumping fluid enters through

the nozzle at the left and passes
through the venturi center at the
center and out of the discharge
opening at the right.

The

nozzle will convert the pressure

energy available upstream into
kinetic energy (shown by the high
velocity of the fluid discharged) thus
creating a force just like the jet
engine principal.
As
the pumping fluid passes
through the nozzle, it develops a
suction force that causes some of the
fluid to be pumped in the suction
chamber to be entrained with the
stream and delivered through this
discharge.

USES
1.

Transferring liquids from

one tank to another
2. Lifting acids, alkalies or
solid containing liquids of an
abrasive nature
3. Emptying sumps

INJECTOR
A

special type of jet pump

operated by steam and used for
boiler feed and similar services.
Uses same principle as that of
the ejector pump
The fluid being pumped is
discharged into the space under
the same pressure as that of the
pumping steam.

ELECTROMAGNETIC
Pump in which the liquid metals are
PUMP
the conductor.
Shows the interaction between a
magnetic field and an electric current
when they are applied at right angles
to each other and to a conductor of
electricity which is known as Flemings
Left hand Rule. This causes an
electromagnetic force that causes the
mechanical motion of the liquid.

TYPES OF EM PUMP
Conduction pump - current is directly
conducted into the fluid through
electrodes. Two variants, A.C & D.C.
Induction pump - current in the
conducting fluid is induced by a
traveling magnetic field.

Thermoelectric

pump - current
flowing through the liquid metal is
derived directly from the thermal
power contained in the hot liquidmetal flow.

MAIN APPLICATIONS
Cooling of nuclear reactor.
Pouring and transportation of high
temperature metals in foundry.
