Fire procedures
Procedure in the event of fire
2.1 On discovering a fire
a) if you discover a fire, raise the alarm immediately
b) if you have been trained and feel that it is safe to do so attempt to fight the fire using the equipment provided
c) if this fails, evacuate immediately
d) ensure that no-one is left in the room and close the door behind you
e) disabled students or staff should be taken to the safe haven by the responsible member of staff.
f) This must be reported to the Fire Warden for that area.
g) A member of staff should stay with the disabled person until help arrives.
h) Evacuation chairs must be used by trained Fire Wardens or personnel.
i) ensure that you or the designated person has called the fire brigade
j) proceed immediately to your designated Fire Assembly Point
2.2 If you hear the fire alarm
a) operate any essential shutdown devices, e.g. machinery
b) when staff or student who are hearing impaired need to be evacuated, the staff must make the disabled person aware of the Fire Beacons which are
red flashing lights which are situated in places which are noisy .
c) buddy system is set up if there is a hearing impaired in a location where not beacon is present.
d) immediately leave using the nearest available fire exit
e) report to your designated assembly point
f) if you are with a visitor, ensure they accompany you
2.3 Fire Marshals
a) encourage staff around you to evacuate and to proceed to their designated assembly point
b) report to the person in charge, declare your building clear
2.4 Person in Charge
a) gather all information regarding the evacuation
b) establish if it is a genuine fire or false alarm
c) ensure that the fire brigade has been called
d) liaise with the fire brigade on its arrival
2.5 Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEPs)
a) Each student with a disability has a PEEP which is drafted by Health
and Safety Manager as part of their induction to the college. This is shared with the personal tutor and the student. This PEEP must be followed during an
evacuation.
