Sourcing Using

Boolean Search
and other Tips

2014

BOOLEAN OPERATORS
Boolean

Operators are an operation that follows the rules of Boolean algebra; each
operator and the result take one of two values.

The

base skill in most research/sourcing involved in Recruiting involves Boolean Search.

Sourcing

is Research and Networking to find People for your Clients or Business

AND + Limits search, use to include required skills,

experience technologies or titles
OR | At least one is required, more than one is
returned. It is good practice to always use
parentheses around OR statements but all search
engines / web sites do not require it. Returned
search will have at least one of the following and if
they have multiple, it will return as well.
NOT Excludes a specific term from the search.
Reduces the results.

BOOLEAN SEARCH MODIFIERS

ASTERISK*

- Use on most resume databases and non-internet

search engines. It will return the highlighted word beginning with
the root. (Manag*) (eg. Manager, Management, Manage)

(PARENTHESES)

Use to encapsulate OR statements and

execute them properly. Or statements wont run as intended if
you do not put in parentheses (eg. AUDIT OR SOX OR ICFR)

QUOTATION

MARKS - Use when searching for exact phrase

or word, or some search engines will split them up. (eg.
Assistant Director)
