GF-4 Drivers
Fuel Economy - North American OEMs
Ford - Committed to 5W-20, looking at 0W-20
DC - Moving to 5W-30 for all engines, looking at 5W-20
GM - Moving towards 5W-30 in all engines, however
some engines still recommend 10W-30, no clear plans on
5W-20

GF-4 will likely include increased fuel

economy requirements from the oil

OEMs must reduce potential sources of catalyst
degradation or increase catalyst loading
Additional catalyst loading can cost $200-300 a vehicle!
Therefore limit potential sources of catalyst degradation:
Reduce oil volatility
Reduce oil phosphorus and sulfur
Reduce mechanical losses

Petro-Canadas Position
Early indications are that Group II base oils
will be even more important with GF-4 than
they were with GF-3. (Sulfur restriction,
low temperature used oil pumpability,
oxidation stability - Group I unfavorable in
each case)
OEMs have stated that GF-4 will be on time!
Petro-Canada is working on prototype
formulations now. Validation testing and
field testing are proceeding.
31

Petro-Canada
will be ready when
GF-4 arrives!
