INTRODUCTION:
Touchscreens may be
popular both in
science fiction and
real life as the symbol
of next-gen
technology, but an
innovation called
Skinput suggests the
true interface of the
future might be us.
Microsoft and
Carnegie Mellon
University unveiled
Skinput recently,
showing how it can
turn your own body

Continued
Microsoft is working on a new
flesh-control input technology
called skinput. But, its not
what youre (probably) thinking.
While it might be possible to one
day adapt this tech to more,
shall we say, erotic
applications, the first iteration of
the skinput technology focuses
on using the flesh as input
controls for mobile devices. The
implication here is that
everything from smartphones to
music players to computers
could be controlled with a simple
double-click on your forearm

What is Skinput?
A new flesh-control input
technology called skinput.
A revolutionary new
technology created by
Microsoft and Carnegie
Mellon University uses 'body
acoustics' to turn your skin
into an interactive
touchscreen called Skinput,
the unusual interface
enables you to use the
surface of your skin to
control your gadgets

ow Skin works as a touch

We transmit data everyday through a host of
media: wires, cables, the air, etc. But did you ever
think we might one day be able to transmit data
through our arms? That too atbroadbandspeeds?
Human skin is apparently a very energy-efficient
conduit for transmitting data
South Korean researchers placed electrodes about
12 inches (30 centimeters) apart on a persons
arm, and found that the low-frequency
electromagnetic waves travel easily through the
skin without any outside interference

Transmission of electromagnetic waves through

skin

Principle:

mechanical
vibrations are
generated in body
when we tap our
finger on body.
these are used as
signals which are
collected by an
armband which
works with an array
of sensors

How it works?
Fantastic advancement in the field of electronic gadgets.
It is able to convert a human arm into touch screen
interface.
Consists of following:

1.Pico projector
2.Acoustic detector

: projects display list

: this is present in armband then
calculates which part of

display

you wanted to activate

3.armband

Pico projector:
A Pico projector can
project a menu, keyboard,
or buttons onto users' skin
to help them navigate
their 'arm touchscreen,'
although the display is
optional--asGizmodo
points out, the 'body
acoustics' technology
allows the Skinput system
to recognize 'which part of
your body you've tapped,
based on the sound that's
made on either the skin,
muscle or skeleton.'

Arm band:
The armband attached to
the bicep area contains five
piezoelectric cantilevers.
Each responds to certain
sound frequency ranges.
. A bulky armband array is
attached to the bicep area
to pick up waves
propagating through arm
tissues after taps on the
fingertips or elsewhere on
the arm, up to the area
above the elbow.

Arm Band

Before using our arm

..some requirements are
to be met
Pandoras box revealed:

variation in bone
density , size ,
mass,filtering effects from
soft tissues and joints
mean different skin
locations are acoustically
different.

waves change
depending on where you
tap as they run through
bone , soft tissues

Special software analyzes the waves and uses the

information to work out exactly where you touched
just as you were tapping on touch screen
next, their software matches sound frequencies to
specific skin locations , allowing the system to
determine which skin button the user pressed.
This also uses wireless technology like bluetooth to
transmit the commands to device being
controlled(ipod /phone /com)

Advantages:
1.No need to interact
with gadget directly
2.Dont have to worry
about keypad
3.People with larger
fingers get trouble in
neighbouring tiny buttons
And keyboards on mobile
phones with skinput that
problem disappears

Disadvantages:
BIG band that looks very easy to put on. Many
people would not wear a very big band around their
arm for the day just to have this product.
Skinput does not answer the incoming calls, you
still have to reach in your pocket, find your phone
and answer it.
Also, not everybody can use this product, the
elderly for example have a hard time adapting to
technology as it Is.
Individuals with visible disabilities such as
amputated arms or the blind cannot use this
product..

Conclusion:
We have presented our approach to appropriating
the human body as an input surface. We have
described a novel, wearable bio-acoustic sensing
array that we built into an armband in order to
detect and localize finger taps on the forearm and
hand. Results from this have shown that our
system performs very well for a series of
gestures, even when the body is in motion
Though it has certain disadvantages at present
,it can be modified in future for better use.
