support the government of Nationalist China, led
byChiang Kai-shek, which is forced to retreat to the
island ofTaiwan.

to SouthVietnam.

1967
The Soviet Union accuses the United
States of encouraging the Israeli attack
and seizure of theSinai,Gaza Strip,
theWest Bank, East Jerusalem, and
theGolan Heights. This attack
becomes known as theSix Day War.

1979

TheSoviet
UnioninvadesAfghanistan,
beginning adecade-long
warthat ends with their
withdrawal in 1988.
