Discovery Essay

Structures
Mrs Alrawi 2015

Essay Tips
Aim for 2-3 major ideas per essay (depends
on how you want to attack the question)
Know all your poems thoroughly so you can
make judicious choices of textual evidence
Start with a detailed discussion of your
prescribed text, related text comes later
Aim to spend about 15 minutes in the
exam writing about your related text

Essay Tips
Always plan your structure might change
depending on the question and your thesis
Remember this is an essay about a
CONCEPT not an essay about texts your
texts are evidence
The marker doesnt want to read 2 or 3
mini-essays so, in later paragraphs, make
brief remarks comparing/contrasting ideas
from poems in earlier paragraphs
remember: you studied them as a suite

Related Text FAQs

Q: Can I choose another poem?
A: You are strongly advised against this. You should explore a wide variety of
texts related to Discovery. Draw your related texts from a variety of sources,
genres and media.
Q: Why dont I just use the related text my teacher modelled?
A: Try to avoid this. It is expected that you take responsibility for your own
selection and analysis of your related text. Your teacher may give you
guidance, but you should seize this opportunity to strengthen your skills as
an independent learner. This is your chance to shine in the exam!
Q: Can I use a text that is already on the HSC Prescribed Texts List?
A: Yes, provided it is relevant to the Area of Study. BOSTES advises that you
will not be disadvantaged by doing this. However, consider that others may
have the same idea, maybe even the same study notes on that text, so you
may hinder your chances of distinguish yourself.
