Case Study

A 54-year-old woman complaining of a sudden

excruciating knifelike pain in the front of the
chest. During the course of the examination, she
said that she could also feel the pain in her back
between the shoulder blades. On close
questioning, she said she felt no pain down the
arms or in the neck. Her blood pressure was
200/110 mm Hg in the right arm and 120/80 mm
Hg in the left arm.

Anatomy is considered the oldest medical science.

Egyptian drawings from 1600 BCE illustrating basic
knowledge of blood vessels demonstrate that we have
always been fascinated with the human body
Knowledge of the structure and function of the
human body is the basis for understanding disease
Knowledge of the structure and function of the
human body is essential for those planning a career
in the health sciences. It is also beneficial to
nonprofessionals because it helps with understanding
overall health and disease, with evaluating
recommended treatments, and with critically
reviewing advertisements and articles.

The word anatomy has Greek roots, as do many other

anatomical terms and phrases that originated more than
1500 years ago. Anatomy, which means a cutting open,
is the study of internal and external structures of the
body and the physical relationships among body
parts.
In contrast, physiology ,another Greek term, is the study
of how living organisms perform their vital functions.

CRITICAL
THINKING

1. Exposure to a hot environment causes the body to

sweat. The hotter the environment, the greater the
sweating. Two anatomy and physiology students
are arguing about the mechanisms involved:
Student A claims that they are positive feedback,
and student B claims they are negative feedback.
Do you agree with student A or student B and why?

1. A male has lost blood as a result of a gunshot wound.

Even though bleeding has been stopped, his blood
pressure is low and dropping and his heart rate is
elevated. Following a blood transfusion, his blood
pressure increases and his heart rate decreases.
Which of the following statement(s) is (are) consistent
with these observations?

CRITICAL
THINKING

a. Negative-feedback mechanisms can be inadequate

without
medical intervention.
b. The transfusion interrupted a positive-feedback
mechanism.
c. The increased heart rate after the gunshot wound
and
before the transfusion is a result of a
positive-feedback
mechanism.
