TECHNIQUES FOR

TEACHING GRAMMAR
STORIES
POEMS
NURSERY RHYMES
SONGS AND CHANTS

STORIES

Stories can be used for both

eliciting and illustrating grammar
points.
In addition, a well-told story is the
perfect context for a structurediscourse
match,
but
the
technique can also be used
effectively for a structure-social
factor match.

A story provides a realistic context

for presenting grammar points and
holds and focuses pupils attention in
a way that no other technique can.
It enable pupils to understand the
language better by providing the
students with real world experiences,
relationships between society and
people where the target language is
spoken, even if they are fictions.

ACTIVITIES
Read the story Snow White & answer the following in nouns and define
whether it is a proper or common noun.
Remember to put the Capitals in case of Proper nouns:
1. Who was the fairest in the land?
2. Who sent Snow White to the forest?
3. Who took Snow White to the forest?
4. What did Snow White see in the forest?
5. Who lived in the cottage?
6. Give the names of the dwarfs?
7. How did Snow White died?
8. How did the wicked queen tricked Snow White?
9. How long did Snow White died?

common) in the story.Put p for
proper and c for common noun

Animals & Things

POEM

Poems, like songs, contextualize a

grammar lesson effectively.
Since
poetry
is
often
spoken,
repeated, dealt with, and considered,
it acts as an effective tool for
practising a specific grammatical
structure.
Through repeating and considering the
poem, the grammatical structures
become more deeply internalized.

Poems may bring the use of creativity

and the rhythm into the language
classroom.
In the selection of a poem, the teacher
should first consider the grammatical
structure to be presented, practiced, or
reviewed, then the level and the age of
the students, next the theme and the
length
of
the
poem
and
its
appropriateness
to
the
classroom
objectives.

ACTIVITy
ALPHABET POEM
Verbs
Past Tense
Dictionary Usage (Vocabulary)
Cooperative
Learning
through
group work

An alphabet poem can be used

to teach parts of speech or
sentence
structure
while
reinforcing dictionary skills.

Since this kind of poem is rather

long, students were put into groups
to write two kinds of alphabet
poems.
This group poem required the pupils
to use their dictionary extensively
and to work together to collate
group ideas into one group poem.

As a warm up , each group was asked

to list on the board all the things that
could be happen in childrens daily life.
To write the second poem, pupils had
to start each letter with a verb in the
past tense.
This enabled the class to revise their
verbs in the simple past tense while
writing some wacky and often hilarious
group poems.

AND
NURSERY RHYMES

chants
and
nursery
rhymes are enchanting and
culturally rich resources that can
easily be used in language

SONG

Hey Momma, when do you use a comma?

Hey Momma, when do you use a comma?
Hey Momma, when do you use a comma?
Well, dear, you use it in a series....
Words in a series are in linear list
They're separated by commas, well, that is
Except the last 2 where you'll show that you're a comma
whiz
You'll never put a comma where an and or or is....
I bought a hat, comma, a coat, comma, a shirt, comma,
some shoes, comma some books and then a watch.
I bought a towel, comma, a shovel, comma, a bucket,
comma ,
some lotion, comma, an innertube and cap.
I want a dog, comma, a cat, comma, a bird, comma,
a fish comma, a camel or a bat.

CHANT
Giraffes are tall, with necks so long.
Elephants' trunks are big and strong.
Zebras have stripes and can gallop
away,
While monkeys in the trees do sway.
Old crocodile swims in a pool so
deep,
Or lies in the sun and goes to sleep.
