PROJECT BASED
LEARNING

We live in the 21st century.

We are teachers & we are to
teach our students for
tomorrow
but not for today or even
yesterday.
How to do it successfully?

Learner Centered
Learning
Productive educational atmosphere
and environment our Ps study in
should be Learner-centered.
Individual approach should be
favourable.

COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH
As far as you know in obedience to our
State educational standards we
are obliged to teach according to
communicative approach
a teaching method in which the goal is
for pupils to be able to communicate
both in the classroom and in the real
life.

Communicative Approach Is
Learner Centered approach
And in spite of the fact that our
classroom is not just the same as our
real life but one of its functions is to
replicate it.

Communicative Approach

We are conscious of the

ideas!!!!

Students learn better in an

interactive environment.
Students like:
- to move, to play, to communicate;
- to get to know something interesting
& create something themselves to
show to their mates & their teachers;
- to share their ideas;
- to talk about their life, problems and
interests.

We are aware of the

facts!!!!

Students learn better when:

atmosphere is friendly;
there is no pressure on them;
they are not corrected by teachers all
the time;
- more time is spent on learning.
Pupils like to do what they like or love
and what they want.
They like to be excellent, brilliant, bright,
super.

In Communicative
Langauge Learning
Classroom

Teacher doesnt dominate.

Teacher is :
organizer, manager, ruler,
informant & provider of knowledge,
observer, consultant, monitor,
stimulator & evaluator.

The main goals are:

To overcome :
- language barrier confidence and
fear of making
mistakes.
To increase Sts motivation & the
feeling of success Learners are always
success succeed
They do what they can and what
they like.
To teach students to use English for

PBL - Project Based Learning

Video 3

https://youtu.be/1hOgszoWEZ4
As you see PBL - Project Based
Learning- can help us to develop
skills which are so necessary for
our 21st century students.

Project work
is becoming an increasingly popular
feature within the ELT classroom.

PBL

Planning the project

Opening - topic orientation
To give learners an idea of :
- what project they are going to be
involved in,
- what they should be aiming to produce (
it is good
to have examples of past projects);

To decide:
- what type of project it can be - individual
or group one;
- what modes of interaction students can

Planning the project

Proposing
After explaining the idea behind the
project ask learners to propose a
scheme of work:
What they want to include in the project;
What form it can take;
Who will be responsible for what ;
An idea of the time it will take to
produce each part of the project ;
Any material or resources they might
need.

Planning the project

Time
Allocate an agreed amount of time
for the project (according to its type
- short\mid\long-term project) :
- a part of the lesson;
- one or some lessons;
- a week / month/ a school year etc.

Planning the project

Space
Show the learners the space they will
have for the project,
it could be wall space or a corner of
the classroom, so they have some
idea how much material they should
produce and can plan the layout.

Planning the project

Materials and resources
Provide the learners with materials
they might need: card, scissors glue,
paper etc.
It is fairly common now for learners
to want to use the Internet to find
information for their projects.
Encourage a keen student with
Internet to do this at home!

Planning the project

Presentation
Projects need to be seen, read and admired so
schedule the last project session as a
presentation.
Ask the group to prepare a task for the others
in the class to do connected to the project.
It could be:
- a quiz with questions for a wall display,
- a crossword using vocabulary for the project or
- comprehension questions for a video that
learners have made.

Sharing Experience
Tasks for the audience can be:
Prepare questions for the presenter or
presenting group to answer;
Add some information on the topic;
Error correction;
Tips of advice on how to improve:
- the form and design of PPP or video
presentation;
- the way of presentation;
- the behavior and manners of the presenter.

Planning the project

Evaluation
As with any piece of work a project
needs to be acknowledged and
evaluated.
It's not enough to just say 'that's
great' after all the work learners
have put in.
I use a simple project evaluation report,
which comments on aspects of the project
such as content, design, language work and
also evaluates the oral presentation stage of

Evaluation

Sharing Experience
To evaluate Sts individual, pair or group
written or typed projects in the class you
may ask them to present and display their
results on the BB in order to give all the
members of the group an opportunity to
see what their projects are and to choose
the best ones .
Sts like to compete, they always like to be
the best & they have their classmates
results like an example to follow & they
always have a chance to improve
their
skills while preparing projects in future.

Project work

ADVANTAGES
Project work includes different modes
of Ps interection:
Individual work
Pair work
Group work
Whole-class work

PAIR & GROUP WORK

Group work is one pedagogical
strategy that promotes participation
and interaction.
It fosters a deeper and more active
learning process.

PAIR & GROUP WORK

Working together in groups also
gives students the opportunity to
learn from and teach each other.
Classroom research has shown that
students often learn better from each
other than they do from a teacher.

ADVANTAGES
OF PAIR AND GROUP
Atmosphere is WORK
friendly and learnercentered;
Teacher doesnt dominate;
Teacher has an opportunity to give
tasks for every student grading
tasks- according to their level &
ability;
All pupils are involved its good for
individual work - personalization;
Ps have an opportunity to be more
independent and self-confident;
Ps are encouraging & highly

ADVANTAGES
OF PAIR AND GROUP
WORK
Pair & Group work
is good for communication
because LTT is longer;
Its good for creative tasks;
Ps are not afraid of making mistakes;
Learners can help & correct each other
using their background knowledge peer
correction ;
Shy, weak and slow learners can rely on their
partners having an example to follow. They
are more likely to ask questions about things
they dont understand.
Learners can really use (show) what they

ADVANTAGES
OF PAIR AND GROUP
WORK
Its good for bringing up because
Ls try to :
- listen to everyone;
- express and share their own ideas;
- show their inner world;
- discuss their personal problems.
All ideas are good and are taken into
consideration.

ADVANTAGES
OF PAIR AND GROUP
WORK

Ps learn how;
- to think and how to speak using their
background knowledge;
- to select and choose good ideas;
- to come up to one common decision.
Ls use the foreign language
Vocabulary & Grammar;

SUMMING UP
Some advantages of
project work

A project involves students in deciding

together what they want to do to
complete a project whilst the teacher
plays a more supporting role.
Increased motivation - learners
become personally involved in the
project.
All four skills - reading, writing,
listening and speaking are integrated.

Some advantages of
project work
Autonomous learning is promoted
as learners become more responsible
for their own learning.
There are learning outcomes learners have an end product.
Authentic tasks and therefore the
language input are more authentic.
Interpersonal relations are
developed through working as a
group.

Some advantages of
project
work
Content and methodology can be

decided between the learners and the

teacher and within the group
themselves so it is more learnercentered.
Learners often get help from
parents for project work thus
involving the parent more in the
child's learning.
If the project is also displayed parents
can see it at open days or when they

Some advantages of
project work
A break from routine and the
chance to do something different.
A context is established which
balances the need for fluency and
accuracy.

Feedback

Some possible
drawbacks
to
PBL
Learners using their own language

If the class are monolingual they may use

their L1 a lot (it often happens anyway in YL
classes) so you should decide whether the
benefits of doing project work outweigh this
factor.
Some learners doing nothing
By giving more freedom to the learners you
may also be giving them the freedom to do
nothing!
If the project is
planned carefully and roles decided at the
proposal stage this is less likely to happen.

Some possible
drawbacks to PBL

Groups working at different speeds

One group may have 'finished' the project
after a couple of hours and say they have
nothing to do. Remind them it is their
responsibility to fill the time allocated to
project work and discuss ways they could
extend the work they have already
completed.

Feedback

TEACHER
Teacher needs good classroom
management skills and good
classroom English.

Language of good
instructions
Instructions should be:
short,
clear & understandable,
appropriate to Ls level,
promoting communication,
timely,
checked .

As for our P-P-P Model (PresentationPractice-Production) Project Based

Learning should be done on the
Practice & Production Stages

Project Work provides constant

opportunities for integrated skills
activities
In the real life we simultaneously use
more than one language skills for
communication.
Integration of the four skills
emphasizes the focus on realistic
language.
The integration helps a teacher add up
more variety into the lesson because
the range of activities will be wider.

It goes without saying that every one

likes music & singing.
Music makes our life brighter & more
colourful.
Can we use music & singing at
the lesson?

Music & PROJECTS

You can use music at the lesson
and after it.
Warming up at the very beginning of
the lesson - to create friendly
atmosphere and involve Ls into the
world of foreign language.
It can help us to enlarge & enrich
vocabulary of the lesson, develop Sts
Listening, Reading and Speaking skills.
https://youtu.be/7vNcSGAJlYE

Music & PROJECTS

A song can be closely connected

with the topic of the lesson.
This can be instrumental or with
lyrics like a visual support .
(Thats What Friends Are For
video**).
https://youtu.be/XvhWsjIlx_I

Music & PROJECTS

We can use music & songs while working
on the definite topic - during several
lessons on practice or production stage.
Sts find and bring their favourite songs
with video & lyrics to share their ideas
and to show their inner world.
Sts can bring the word list with new
words or the list with lyrics to distribute
in the class.
Its good for bringing up, developing
personality & making close friends.
