Background
Public life in handicrafts field is growing. One of the finishing process
of souvenir products / handicraft such as bracelets, necklaces, rings,
household appliances, automotive is the electroplating process.
The advantages that can be obtained from the electroplating process
are resistant to corrosion and products becomes bright / glossy. Hower,
the process will generates solid waste, liquid and gas emissions.

Liquid waste contains of dissolved metals and more hazardous

compounds. In addition this waste con pollure the environment
and can be harmful to health.

In order to not pollute the environment and damage the health the
metal waste to be discharged into the environment content of have to
be less than maximum content of limit effluent quality standards for
the production metallic coatings by the environment minister decision
KEP-51 / MENLH / 10/1995.
With parameters (total suspended solids) TSS (60 mg / L), cyanide
(12.05 mg / L), total metal (8.0 mg / L), copper (Cu) (3.0 mg / L),
nickel (Ni ) (5.0 mg / L) and pH (6.0 to 9.0).

Research Objectives
To determine the rate of decline after electroplating wastes mixed with
the ulva were treated with whiting.
To find which of the ulva biosorben and ulva is with whiting
treatments has the ability to reduce levels of electroplating waste
better.

problem definition
the need for problem definition. Limitations are as follows :
Time required to filter waste and biosorben until mixture becomes a
liquid that is ready to be tested is assumed equal.
Raw materials biosorben by whiting treatments used is to 1 kilograms
Ulva is mixed by 100 grams lime to first sample of 250 grams lime to
300 grams sample of a second and third samples by lime to was added
2 liters of water to each treatment.
To 100 ml of electroplating waste mixed by 15 grams biosorben
powder in 30 minutes.

benefits research
To provide input for industries engaged in the electroplating (plating)
metal to utilize seaweed as biosorben absorption of heavy metals.
Reducing rate of spread waste in the environment.
Utilizing waste as waste neutralizer.
Additionally the experience and science that is very meaningful to
researchers in filtering waste.

Jenis biosorben

Beosorben ulva without whiting successfully reduced until 99% Ni

content. Because the levels were absorbed is smaller waste compared
to using ulva without lime, it percentage decrease in Ni content
biosorben ulva by treatments whiting are also is smaller in the amount
of 97.9%, 96.6% and 96.8% respectively - each ulva (ulva + whiting
100 g), (Ulva + whiting 250 grams) and, (Ulva + whiting 300 grams).
Biosorben ulva were are treated by whiting has the ability to absorb
elements Ni lower than biosorben ulva without whiting so the best
biosorben is ulva without mixture whiting.

Concentration whiting in biosorben do not have a clear relationship to

the ability to absorb Ni where the higher levels of whiting, the
remaining waste levels fluktrasi.
ulva lactuca seaweed species have a high enough ability in to adsorb
heavy metals because on in algae are functional groups were can do by
binding of metal ions. The functional groupsmainly carboxyl groups,
hydroxyl, amine, sulfudril, imadazol, sulfate and sulfonate present in
the cytoplasm of cell wall (Sinly Evan Son, 2006).

In this study biosorben ulva lactuca are treated by whiting to absorb

the levels of nickel on in electroplating waste but mix whiting have
been inhibiting the absorption of Ni content.
This is because whiting has covered the pores of biosorben ulva
lactuca and when filtering by filter paper equip guide produce
limestone deposits in filtering results It is most likely were cause
becoming an absorption of nickel levels slightly.

Conclusion
Based on the research conducted, it can be concluded as follows:
Ni content in electroplating wastewater was 162 mg / L decreased 99%
to 1.46 mg / L by using biosorben ulva.
Concentration levels of whiting by biosorben have no significant
correlation to decrease levels of Ni and has less ability to reduce levels
of Ni than ulva without treatments.
Biosorben ulva and ulva by 100 grams whiting could reduce levels
under limit of Ni until quality standards. The best Biosorben is ulva
without a treatments because it has ability to reduce the higher Ni and
do not need other treatments.

Suggestion
More research needs to be done to know the metal elements were has
not tested as: chromium element (Cr), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc
(Zn), cyanide (Cn) and so on.
Is necessary to determine the concentration of whiting more precise so
as not to close off pores of ulva lactuca.
