Theoretical Framework

Research design

particular subgroup (18 to 25 years old students) from

Universiti Utara Malaysia, Kedah.

It includes quantitative data whereby a survey questionnaire
was distributed to the selected sample.

Sampling
Thirty female and male respondents were selected for this

study .I5 male and 15 female respondents were randomly

chosen.
they are Malaysian students who are studying at Universiti
Utara Malaysia and they are in the range of 20 to 24 years
old.

Instrumentation

questionnaires for data collection.

The researchers waited while the respondents filled the

questionnaires to guide those that had any queries and then

collected them immediately after they had completed so as to
avoid further discussions with the others.

Procedures of data collection

A total of 30 questionnaires were collected and manually computed. The

study recognized the ethical and legal considerations involved during data
collection. The study abided by these principles was that:
1. Respondents who were approached but declined participation were
respected and not persuaded against their wishes.
2. those who had access to the data were committed to confidentially.
3. No names were required of the respondents so as to keep the
information private and confidential.
4. All information was protected against violation or invasion of privacy
and
5. Individuals were not specifically identified with their data unless it was
necessary and only if the individuals had given consent.
All the questionnaires were complete. A total of thirty questionnaires were
analyzed.

Data analysis
The total number of responds was divided by the total number of

respondents (30).It was the n multiplied by 100 to obtain the

percentage.
The section pertaining to the respondents attitudes towards acquiring
English language were based on the five point Likert Scale. The
respondents interest was measured using the scoring method whereby
points were allocated for the responses chosen. A response that
indicated more positive interests in the language was given a higher
score. The total score of each respondents indicated whether his or her
interest in the language was categorized as positive, negative, or
neutral.
