Present perfect VS Simple past

Present perfect formula:

Subject + Have/has + V3 +
for/since + object
Example:
She has been here since 1980.
They have lived here for twenty years.
I have played guitar for 5 years.

Simple Past Tense

Subject + V2 + object + time

Example:
She was in Caracas in 1975.
They lived there for ten years.
We spoke twice yesterday.

SIMPLE PAST (Verb 2)

PRESENT PERFECT (Verb 3)

Used

used

made

made

flew

flown

brought

brought

drank

drunk

drew

drawn

was/were

been

Note:
We must remember when we want put V3 we must use
have / has before.
Example:
She drawn anime for 1 hour ( this is wrong)
She has drawn anime for 1 hour (this is correct)
Because sometimes many people forget to add has/have
before they add V3.

We can see from our slides before,

that is the basic use of present
perfect and simple past, on the next
we will look that actually there are
vary types in the use of present
perfect and past tense.

Present perfect:
Present perfect is used to talk about the things that
started in the past, continue up to the present, and may
continue into the future.
Past
future
have lived

now

They have lived apart for three years. (They started living
apart three years ago and are still living apart.

Simple past tense:

Simple past tense is used to talk about things that
happened in the past and have no connection to the
present.
now

1987 1988 1989 1990

They lived in Detroit for three years. ( they lived in detroit
until 1990. they no longer live in Detroit.

Present perfect:
The present perfect is also used to talk about things that
happened at an unspecified time in the past.

have decided
now
They have decided to travel back and forth. (we dont
know exactly when the decision was made, or the timing
of the decision is not important.

Simple past tense:

The simple past tense is used to talk about things that

happened at specific time in the past. The exact time is
known and sometimes stated.
lived

1990
They lived in Detroit in 1990. (the time expression is
stated and clear).

Be Careful :
Do not use specific past time expression with presen
perfect except after since.
Example :
I lived in Detroit in 1997
Not I have lived in Detroit in 1997.

Present perfect :
Use the present perfect to talk about things that have
happened in a time period that is not finished, such as
today, this morning, this month, this year. So this
diagram is the same with the slide number 7 that state
present perfect is talk about things that may continue up
to the present and may to the future
Example:
Shes had three cups of coffee this morning. ( Its still this
morning, and its possible that she will have some more.)

Simple past tense:

Use simple past tense to talk about things that happened
in a time period that is finished. Such as yesterday, last
month, last year. This state is the same as slide number 8
that say simple pas tense is used to talk about things
that happened in the past and there is no connection to
the present.
Example:
She had three cups of coffee yesterday ( Yesterday is
finished.)
I went to Plaza Pacific last month. ( Last month is

Be careful:
Some time expressions like this morning, or this year can
refer to a finished or unfinished time period. Use the
present perfect if the time period is unfinished. Use the
simple past tense if the time period is finished.
Example:
Its 10:00 A.M. shes had three cups of coffee this
morning. ( the morning is not over.)
Its 1:00 P.M. she had three cups of coffee this morning
(the morning is over.)
