The Elements of Network

Services
Network services are computer programs that support the human network. Distributed on
devices throughout the network, these services facilitate online communication tools

Rules
Protocols are the rules that the networked devices use to communicate with each other.
The industry standard in networking today is a set of protocols called TCP/IP

The Messages
All types of messages must be converted to bits, binary coded digital signals, before being
sent to their destinations.

The Devices
A computer is only one type of device that can send and receive messages over a network.
(Telephones, cameras, printers and game consoles.

The Medium
The computer must be connected to a wired or wireless local network.

3- Network components
Network has three main components
End devices (servers and hosts)
- Source of applications (network aware applications)
- ex: HTTP (Hyper Text Transmission Protocol),
FTP (File Transfer Protocol),
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)
Telnet

Network Devices
- Devices that interconnect different computers together
- ex: Repeaters, hub, bridge, switch, router, NIC and modems

Connectivity
- Media that physically connect the computers and network devices
- ex: Wireless and cables
