Examples:
Short-term goal
(To pass the class test next week)
Medium-term goal
(To pass all the subjects in Mid-Year
Examinations)
Long-term goal
(To get at least 2 distinctions in the National
Examinations)
SMART Goals
When setting goals, ensure that
the goals are SMART:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable / Achievable
- Relevant / Realistic
- Time-Oriented
Specific Goals
The more specific the goal, the more likely it will be
achieved. So instead of telling yourself "I'll do
some statistics tonight" try "I'll do 3 problems on
page 48 of statistics tonight between 7:00 - 8:00
pm".
Measurable Goals
This helps you to keep track of your
progress (monitoring). So use numbers and
times. For example, I will do 3 statistics
problems this evening. If you only do one,
you didn't reach your goal and you may
need to change your approach.
Attainable/Achievable
Goals
Time-based Goals
We tend to use deadlines to create
pressure. Make realistic time frames for
your work. Building realistic
commitments and deadlines into your
study is good.
