Introduction:
Electric power quality have become more increasingly

important and plays an essential role in power system

planning.
Electric energy transfer must not be interrupted and at the

same time there must provide reliable, stable and high quality
of electric power.
In this project, we had shown the power quality improvement

using STATCOM.

Power Quality:
Any power problem that results in failure or mis-operation of
customer equipment, manifests itself as an economic burden to the
user, or produces negative impacts on the environment.

Main Power quality problems:

Voltage Sags or Dips
Voltage Swells
Harmonic Distortion
Power Factor

Solutions to Power Quality Problems :

Lightening and Surge arresters
Thyristor Based Static Switches
Energy Storage Systems
Electronic Tap Changing Transformers
Harmonic Filters
Constant Voltage Transformers

FACTS:
Applications of FACTS-Devices:
Power flow control
Increase of transmission capability
Voltage control
Reactive power compensation
Stability improvement
Power quality improvement

Devices used in FACTS:

Distribution static compensator(DSTATCOM)
Static compensator(STATCOM)
Dynamic voltage restorer(DVR)
Unified power quality conditioner(UPQC)

Grid connected Wind Energy System:

Proposed STATCOM control scheme for grid connected wind

energy generation for power quality improvement

Wind Energy :
The terms wind energy or wind power describe the

process by which the wind is used to generate

mechanical power or electricity.
Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind
into mechanical power.
Mechanical power can be used for specific tasks
(such as grinding grain or pumping water) or a
generator can convert this mechanical power into
electricity.

is in off condition from 0 0.1 after the 0.1 time STATCOM is in
operating condition

Load, here we get 2.53%.

Main Objective of this project:

Power factor correction
Voltage regulation
Harmonic filtering in distribution systems.
Power quality improvement by using STATCOM

Out put wave forms:

Out put wave forms of source and load currents when STATCOM is in off
condition from 0 0.1 after the 0.1 time FUZZY based STATCOM is in
operating condition

THD for a circuit with Fuzzy based

STATCOM:

FFT analysis of the source current using the fuzzy

controller, we get 0.40%.

THD for a circuit with PI&Fuzzy based

STATCOM :

FFT analysis of the source current using the PI&Fuzzy

controller, we get 0.17%.

Conclusion:
This project presents the FUZZY

control based

STATCOM scheme for reactive power compensation and

harmonic reduction in grid connected wind generating
system feeding non linear load.
The control system for the STATCOM is simulated using

soft ware MAT LAB/SIMULINK.

The proposed control scheme has improved the power

quality requirement of a low voltage grid connected wind

driven IG system feeding a non-linear load.
