College Profile

The Madura College, the citadel of learning established in


1889 stands like a towering titan between centuries.

Courses offered: 9 Post- Graduate courses


7 Under Graduate courses.

Centres for Research leading to Ph.D degree: Dept. of


Zoology, Dept. of Tamil, Dept. of Botany and Dept. of
Philosophy and Dept. of Physics.

The college attained autonomous status in 1978.

Accredited at B++ level by NAAC in 2003.


Department of English

The Department of English is as old as the institution.

The faculty members actively engage in research activities.

Some also serve as research guides for M.Phil. and Ph.D courses at
various universities.

Many of the staff members are question paper setters and examiners at
Post Graduate and Under graduate levels of many autonomous
institutions and universities.

A few of the staff members are also members of Board of Studies in


English in sister institutions.

The faculties of the department have published articles in various


refereed journals and presented papers in several international and
national seminars/conferences/workshops.

Curriculum
M.A. : A total of 20 papers - five papers in each Semester with an exercise
optional paper during the 3rd and 4th Semester under CBCS programme.

Papers offered: Shakespeare, Survey of British Literature,


American Literature, Indian Writing in English, Language and Linguistics,
Modern Literature I, II, III and IV, Continental Literature, Literature by
Women, Indian Regional Literatures in English are part of the curriculum.

Papers like New Literatures in English, Twentieth Century


Canadian Literature are taught with the syllabus in line with the SET/NET
examinations.

An Introduction to Journalism, Literary Criticism, Research Methodology,


Comparative Literature, English for Formal Writing and An Introduction to
Theory & Practice in Translation help the students in sharpening the
understanding of the nuances of the subject matter and increase their
employability.
The students are given three periodical tests, to test the
understanding of the subject.
Seminars are conducted at regular intervals for the students in
all the subjects so that the expression language and the style
of presentation improve with each seminar.
The assignments are given for the student to summarize the
whole content of the subject matters.
There is an end Semester Examination too.
While external examination is valued for 75 the internal is
assessed for 25 marks.
Workshops are organized for students, periodically, to improve
the communication skills and exposition of gain in knowledge.
M.Phil programme

The department has been offering M.Phil


programme for more than a decade.

The department has already produced one


hundred and thirty five M.Phil scholars.

The emphasize of the M.Phil course is on


Literary Theory, Research Methodology
and Modern Rhetoric etc…
Department Library
Apart from the General Library, there is a department library as
well. There is a total of 1404 books available, of which 300 books
transferred from the General Library and, donated by the retired
teachers. Each year about 150-200 books are added to the
department library, which are purchased from UGC funds /
donated by teachers.
The Department subscribes the following Journals:
Literary Criterion
Journal of Indian Writing in English
Additionally, News Papers – The Hindu and The New Indian
Express are placed in the Department Library.
Students are encouraged to spent time in the Department Library
consulting books, journals etc, for presenting the assignments
and for participation in periodical debates.

Highlights of the Department
Department of English established in tandem with the
college has been actively involved in enhancing the
communicative skills of the students. Since the advent of
autonomy it has made its experiments with the curriculum at
all levels.
The instruction in part II pays attention to grammar, formal
writing, creative writing and most importantly communicative
skills. By making the Part II English syllabus for the U.G.
students containing language and literary components the
department provides them with equal exposure to the
technical presentation of language skills and to literature that
would enable them to go to literature in their later years for
spiritual and emotional solace and expansion through
vicarious experience. At the PG level there are papers of
high literary content and literary training and also papers of
professional interest that would enhance the students to
tackle in their higher education. M.Phil course in English
literature, which was introduced in 1989-90 and offers
papers on recent literature and recent literary criticism, both
theory and practice.
Remedial classes are conducted for low
achievers. Bridge course is being conducted for
the first year U.G. students.
The Department has an excellent library which
contains books on literature and related
subjects and back volumes of some journals.
There is a language laboratory too which
helps the students to horn their skills in
phonetics and other such aspects of English.
The department is equipped with
electronic gadgets like a tape recorder,
audio tapes and compact discs for
teaching spoken English, gramophone
records of some Shakespeare plays and
some poetry, a television set and a DVD
player.
Audio materials are used for teaching
phonetics for Post Graduates.
The Department has developed good contacts with several
Institutes of Higher Learning and Research Institutes.
These enable us to invite eminent scholars to give lectures
on recent topics in English Literature, English Language
Teaching, and Mass Communication etc. These include:
International English Teacher’s Association,
School of English & Foreign Languages, Madurai Kamaraj

Special Invited Lectures, Discussions and paper
presentation programmes are arranged at regular
intervals.
The department organized a National level UGC
sponsored seminar on “Ethics and Values”, a State
Level UGC sponsored seminar on “The Expatriate
Indian Writing in English”, a regional seminar on
R.K.Narayan to commemorate his birth centenary,
and a one day workshop on painting and literature in
the past two years.
