Plot
 Definition: The main events in a story or novel

Nurse informs her Romeo is a Montague, as does Romeo
when he learns Juliet is a Capulet.

 Definition: They point of view that the story is

 Definition: The way that a character is
described and their personality

 He was kind and friendly to everyone




Theme
 Definition: The subject of a story and the view
point that it is told

 The party was fun and full of laughter with
bright sunshine


Alliteration
 Definition: The use of the same letter and or
word recurring throughout the literature

 An apple aimlessly attacked an ant


Allusion
 Definition: The practice of bringing things to
mind

 Pictures can bring back memories such as
stairs
Analogy
 Definition: The comparison between two people
and their talking points throughout the
literature

 “Hello John, how are you?’ asked Bill
 “Hey I am fine thank you Bill” said John


Antagonist
 Definition: The one in the story who is hostile
and opposes the main character

 John pushed Bill down the stairs

Aside
 Definition: A remark that is intended to be
heard by the audience but not the characters
in the play

 “Ha they don’t know that my real plan is to
take their money” thought Charlie

Blank Verse
 Definition: A verse without rhyme

 Today we shall go down the the store

Climax
 Definition: The most exciting and intense point
of a story where the plot unfolds

 Then Harvey took the final step and made it to
the top of the mountain.


Comic Relief
 Definition: To offset more serious points in
literature

 The house burned down. “Well at least I’ll
never have to deal with the dishes again.”



Conflict
 Definition: A disagreement or opposition in a
work of literature

 They had finally made it to the river bed but
there was only enough water for one person
because of the hot dry climate.
Couplet
 Definition: a type of rhyme that only has two
verses

 Once upon a time
 I wrote this little rhyme


Diction
 Definition: A style of speaking or writing

 It is a strange diction that he uses to write.



Dramatic Irony
 Definition: : The expression by using something
that usually means the opposite

 The hunter was now the hunted
Dramatic Structure
 Definition: The structure of a story that brings
drama

 Exposition to rising action to climax to falling
action is the order of dramatic structure

Epithet
 Definition: A word that expresses the
characteristics of something that is a
generalization

 Definition: To use words that have special
meaning that mean different things that what
the dictionary meaning is

 Definition: To show something in the beginning
that will become important later in the story

 Definition: To stop or ruin some ones plans to
do something

 He foiled their plans by calling the police
Imagery
 Definition: The use of words to create specific
images in some ones head

 The red rubber ball was as big as a watermelon
Irony
 Definition: Using language that usually means
the opposite of something to get an idea
across

 “A traffic jam when you're already late... to
receive an award from the Municipal Planning
Board for reducing the city's automobile
congestion 80 percent.”

 Definition: : A measurement of speech that is
used in poems and rhymes

 I used a meter to measure the sentence
poetically.



Metaphor
 Definition: A statement that applies to a word
or action but not literally

 It’s so hot I could fry eggs on the street.

 Definition: One character talking for a long
section of a literary piece without any
interruptions

 “ I am so happy because I won the lottery. I feel
like I can do anything now. I can now buy
whatever I want…”



Oxymoron
 Definition: Something that is impossible and or
cannot be done

 Definition: Giving an object a personality and
letting it become like a person

 “Pass the salt.” said the crocodile


Protagonist
 Definition: The leading character in a story

 Frodo is a protagonist in Lord of the Rings
Pun
 Definition: A joke using the different
possibilities of the meaning of a word

 I have a fear of needles. They really get under
my skin.

 Definition: The meter of a rhyme and how it is
setup

 Definition: A situation that brings about irony

 Definition: The act of speaking aloud to oneself
regardless if others are listening or not

Sonnet
 Definition: A poem of fourteen lines that uses a
specific meter

Symbol
 Definition: An object or idea that means
something other that that of which it really is

 His charity is a symbol of his kindness.



Tragedy
 Definition: When something occurs that is very
depressing or meaningful

 The child is now fatherless.


Verbal Irony
 Definition: Using words to express irony

 I’m sorry but your house has burned down sir”
said the policeman
 “Oh Great” replied Robby
