Network

operating system refers, to software that


implements an operating system of some kind that is
oriented to computer networking. For example, one that runs
on a server and enables the server to manage data, users,
groups, security, applications, and other networking
functions.

The primary purpose of the network operating system is to
allow shared file and printer access among multiple
computers in a network, typically a local area network (LAN),

Examples of network operating systems are CISCO IOS,
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server
2008, UNIX, Linux, Mac OS X, Novell NetWare, and BSD.

1984-Computer scientists Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner from Stanford

University co-found Cisco Systems. They work with other developers to


enable disparate networks to talk to each other and share information.
1985-Cisco ships its first product, the MEIS Subsystem. Meanwhile, the
first .com and .edu domains are assigned
1986- The company ships its first routing innovation - the Advanced
Gateway Server
1988- Cisco releases its Multiport Communication Interface - the highest
speed network interface in the industry
1989- The Designs Border Gateway Protocol arrives. Total number of
internet hosts breaks the 100,000 barrier
1991- Cisco opens its first international offices in London and France - its
market capitalisation reaches 56m
1992- Cisco launched the 3000 and 4000 series routers
1994- Cisco's Catalyst switch is launched - the first switch for
client/server workgroups
1996- More e-mail is sent around the world than regular "snail mail".
Cisco ships one million network access products
1997- Cisco Networking Academy launched to help teach students how
to design, install and maintain networks
1999- Cisco 12000 Terabit system released. First Cisco IP phone shipped

2001- Cisco develops the iSCSI protocol with IBM and

addsIPv6 protocol to its IOS software.


2003- Cisco continues acquisition trail and plans to
enter new markets by acquiring home networking and
wireless specialist firm Linksys
2004- Cisco CRSI delivers data voice, and video 4x
faster and 100x more capacity than any router.
2005- Scientific Atlanta acquisition enables service
providers to add video to their combined Internet,
wireless and phone offerings.
2006- Cisco telepresence launched, revolutionizing hidef videos and spatial audio conferencing across
multiple locations.
2011- Cisco rolls out end to end data center
framework to build , manage and connect clouds.
2014- Cisco announces strategy for Internet of
Everything, story takes flight.

locations and types of systems.
The disadvantages
High cost of buying and running a server.
Dependency on a central location for most operations.
Regular maintenance and updates are required.

Cisco IOS Software 15 release family


15 M and T
Provides Cisco IOS Software functionality and

hardware adoption for enterprise, access, and


commercial networks. Incorporates new
software features and hardware introduced in
the Cisco IOS Software 12.4T train. Extended
maintenance releases contain an uppercase M
and provide bug fixes for 44 months, the first
extended maintenance release is Cisco IOS
Software Release 15.0(1)M.
