Lesson Plan
in English VI

Notes to the Teacher


This lesson is intended to develop
the Naturalist intelligence of pupils as
well as the Visual learning modality.
Through the use of pictures and written
descriptions of the different events in
the story, the Visual learners will be
able to sequence the key concepts of
the story.

The Language/ Speech activity makes use of


choral reading to make pupils appreciate better
the importance of trees, which are part of nature.
Also, in the enrichment portion of the lesson,
their concern and love for the environment will
be put into use through the plans they will make,
to be able to conserve trees in their respective
barangays.

As an offshoot of the lesson, in the agreement


portion, the pupils interpersonal skills will also
be enhanced through the reflections they write on
their individual journals.

I. OBJECTIVES:

1. Note details in the selection listened to.


2. Sequence the key concepts/ ideas to
show wholeness of the story.
3. Read orally/ Recite a poem cast for a
verse choir.
4. Write a summary of what was read.

Materials: Pictures/ illustrations of the major


events in the story, The Giving Tree,
sentence strips with written descriptions of the
pictures events, picture of a crown, swing,
word cards with the words stump, crown,
swing, shade, chart on choral arrangements,
sentence strips with the steps in making
crayons.
Integration: Science-Conservation/

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Pre- Reading
1. Motivation/ Eliciting prior knowledge:
Play a Guessing game by giving clues one at
a time.
Say: Im thinking of something that.
a. bears flowers(what is it?)
b. some bear fruits(what is it?)
c. can grow so big and tall
d. it is a 4-letter word(additional clues
can be given)

2. Setting of Motive questions.


Show a picture of a man sitting on a tree
stump and post the title The Giving Tree
on the board. Have pupils connect the title
with the picture. Let them formulate
questions they would want to as before
reading the story.
3. Vocabulary building activities
Picture clues. Stump, crown
Act it out.. Swing
Context clues. shade

B. Reading:
1. Call on four pupils to read the part of the
narrators, the tree and the boy.
2. Let the other pupils listen as the story is
read.
3. Let them answer the motive questions they
set.
4. Comprehension check (Noting details- refer
to the questions found after the selection.)

C. Skill Development/ Practice


1. Present the events of the story in pictures.
Call on some pupils to arrange these pictures
according to the sequence of events
presented in the story.
2. Present the sentence strips showing the
events in the story. Call on some pupils to
match the sentence strips to the appropriate
picture.
3. Call on pupils to summarize the whole
story using the pictures and sentence strips
showing the different events.

D. Language and Speech Activity:


1. Divide the class into 4 groups. One group
will read the part of narrator 1, another group
for narrator 2, another for the boys part and
the part of the tree. (Instruct that they should
use an appropriate pitch and voice for their
part.)
2. After the time given for practice, let the
class do an interpretative reading of the story.
3. Present a copy of the poem Trees, on
Manila paper. Have them read it silently.

4. Let the pupils listen as the teacher


models the reading of the poem.
5. Discuss briefly the following four
possible arrangements for choral reading;
a. Echo reading- the leader reads each
line, and the group repeats it.
b. Leader and chorus reading- the
leader reads the main part of the poem
and the group reads the refrain or chorus
in unison.

c. Small-group reading- the class/ group


divides into two or more groups and each
group reads one part of the poem.
d. Cumulative reading- one pupil or group
reads the first line or stanza, and another
pupil or group joins as each line or stanza is
read so that a cumulative effect is created.
6. Have each group select which arrangement
they will use for presenting the poem
Trees. Have them practice in 10 minutes.

7. Have the groups present a choral reading in


the poem.
8. Call on some pupils to give comments on the
activity done.
9. Discuss the importance of trees.
E. Application
1. let the pupils read the story Treasures
From the Deep, on pages 238-241 of the
Reading textbook.
2. On their notebooks, have them write down
the processes in the production of cultured
pearls.

F. Enrichment: (Integration)
1. Have pupils form groups of 7 9maybe less
depending on class size). Let them pretend to
be Sangguniang Kabataan officers of their
barangay. Let them plan tree conservation/
preservation activities.
Suggested activities:
a. Poster-making
d. Tree-planting action
plan
b. jingles
e. Tree care/follow-up plan
c. announcements f. Drama/ Role-playing

2. Give them time to prepare outputs.


3. Presentation of group outputs.
4. Have groups comment on the activity done.
IV. EVALUATION
(Note to the Teacher: On a sheet of Manila
paper, write down the processes in making
crayons in jumbled order. Post this on the
board before reading the selection.)
1. Let the pupils listen to the selection given.
This will be read twice only.

MAKING CRAYONS

The wax is melted in a big mixing kettle.


Colored powders are stirred into the wax.
The hot-colored wax is poured into mold
tables of various shapes and sizes. The
wax is set aside to harden. The crayons
are then pressed from the mold. They are
wrapped in labels that match their colors.
Finally, the crayons are arranged in
crayon boxes.

2. Arrange the processes in making crayons in


proper sequence. Then make a summary of it
in paragraph form.
V. ASSIGNMENT/ AGREEMENT
On a sheet of bond paper, make a double
entry journal like the one below, and write
your own thoughts about the quotation given.
