Metrology

Metrology is the science of measurement

Dimensional metrology is that branch of
Metrology which deals with measurement of
dimensions of a part or workpiece (lengths,
angles, etc.)
Dimensional measurements at the required
level of accuracy are the essential link
between the designers intent and a delivered
product.

Aspects of Metrology
Reference standard metrology
Engineering Metrology

Basic Measurement
Devices
Surface Plates.
Dial Gauges.
Micrometers and Verniers.
Gage Blocks.

Dimensional Metrology
Needs
Linear measurements
Angular measurements
Geometric form measurements
Roundness
Straightness
Cylindricity
Flatness, etc

Dimensional Metrology
Needs
Geometric relationships
Parallel, perpendicular, etc.

Masters in Metrology
1. Slip Gauge, Grade 00
2. Optical Flats
3. Angle Gauges
4.Glass Scale(U.L.M)
5. Roughness Master

Activities of Metrology
1.Calibration of Secondary standards(Slip
Gauges).
Calibration of Standard Rings and Feeling pins.
Calibration of thread Master Gauges
(TPG, TRG, CP and WCP Gauges).
Calibration of Dial Gauges(LT &PT Dials).
Calibration of Verniers,Micrometers,Height
gauges etc...

Calibration of Radius gauges, Feeler Gauges,

Thread Pitch Gauges, Hole Check.
Calibration of Spirit Levels and Clinometers.
Calibration of V-blocks, Bevel Protractors, Try
Squares.

Procedure Followed in
Department
Calibration interval for all the instruments
/gauges /equipments is established by the Lab
and
is
performed
based
on
the
recommendations of the Supplier, extent of
usage and Previous year calibration results.
Month wise Calibration Schedule is prepared in
line with the calibration intervals.

Monthly Calibration request slips are issued as

per the schedule for those intstruments that
require calibration, reminding the bearer of
instrument to send those instruments for
calibration.
After
receiving
the
instruments
/gauges,calibration
is
performed
under
controlled conditions by calibration procedures
using primary standards tracable to the
national standards. If deviations are found then
certain corrections/adjustments are made to
bring back to its specified limits.

If the instrument/gauges are not sent for

calibration, respective QC-In charge is
informed about the details of the non
calibrated items and subsequently the
components produced using that particular
instruments/gauges is not accepted till the
employee provides the evidence of calibration
for those items.

Error card is prepared where ever required in

duplicate for the instruments/gauges
calibrated. One copy is issued to the user
along with the instrument and the other one is
retained in lab for future reference
After carrying out the calibration color codes
are painted or accepted calibration
stickers(green in color) are affixed to the
instrument/gauge/equipment as per the color
code chart indicating the next due month for
calibration
