SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
1.Used when things are done
everyday; like a time-table.
 Examples:
ØEvery morning, he
wakes up at 6 o’clock.
ØWe go to school by bus.
ØHe plays golf every
weekend.
2. Used when talking about a job
or because it is a habit.
 Example:
ØMy father earns about RM
40 000 a year.
ØHe smokes when he gets
nervous.
ØThe girls giggle whenever
they see their English
teacher.

3. Used to show things that are
going to happen.
 Example:
ØThe last train leaves at
10.30 p.m.
ØShe arrives from
Malacca on the Star
Cruise this evening.
ØWater collects in the
small pool when it
rains.
4. Used in sentences that begin
with ‘here’ and ‘there’.
 Example:
ØThere goes my favorite
actress in her private
limousine.
ØHere comes the taxi!
ØThere is a fly in my soup!
5. Used when things are done
at certain times.
 Example:
ØI never come home late
without telling my
parents first.
ØAdif usually calls up his
brother for help.
ØSir Lambert often
travels with his man-
servant.
ØThey always add black
soya sauce to their fried
6. Used when talking about
knowledge or general
statement.
 Example:
ØThe moon moves around
the earth.
ØPlants grow healthily
with enough water and
sunlight.

7. Used in instructions or as a

Ø Use Verb + s/es

Present continuous Tense
Use to shows when things
are still happening:
 Example:
§ Madam Lilian is teaching
Geography in class now.
§ They are drinking lemonade at the
picnic.
§ The baby is sleeping soundly in
her cot.
§ We are having fun riding on the
roller coaster.

Used to show things which
are going to happen:
 Example:
§ They are playing against the
current state champion in the
finals next week.
§ I am visiting my grandparents
this semester break.
§ The airplane is taking off at
three o’clock this afternoon.
§ He is running in the marathon
tomorrow.
When talking about a job or a
situation:
 Example:
§ He is working at the men’s
section at SOGO.
§ The war is killing innocent lives.
§ Johan is hunting for the rare red-
bellied porcupine for his
scientific research.
Used for general statements:
 Example:
§ Learning at an age helps children
develop confidence.
§ Advancing technology brings us
closer to the future.

Present Perfect
The structure of the present perfect tense is:

subject + auxiliary + main verb

Examples:
qYou have seen that movie many times.
qHave you seen that movie many times?
qYou have not seen that movie many times.
USE 1 Unspecified Time Before Now

To say that an action happened at an


unspecified time before now. The exact time
is not important.
Examples:
qI have seen that movie twenty times.
Present Perfect Continuous

The structure of the present perfect continuous tense is:

subject + auxiliary + auxiliary + main verb

qHe has been talking for an half hour.

qYou have been waiting here for two hours.
USE 1 Duration from the Past Until Now

To show that something started in the past and has


continued up until now.
Examples:
qThey have been talking for the last hour.
USE 2 Recently, Lately

WITHOUT a duration such as "for two weeks.“


Examples:
qRecently, I have been feeling really tired.
