ABSTRACT

Every cricket teams coach spends hours observing the batsmens

performance to analyze his weaknesses and strengths.
If the experts are to be believed, every sport including cricket
involves the right technique which is acquired through intense
practice and observation.
After the grip, guard and stance, comes the important part in
batting and that is the back lift and shot depending on the ball.
What if the tedious task of going through a players performances
in different matches on videos is eliminated by providing directly
the consolidated data of his shots and the deviations from the
perfect shot? That is exactly what we aim at!
Lets take you through the different shots of cricket and the perfect
positions of playing them.
Our project is an attempt to make used of the Wiced Sense kit,
equipped with gyro sensor, accelerometer and magnetic compass

BACKGROUND: THE IMPORTANCE OF

TECHNIQUE

Athletes these days travel around the

world. They have to deal with immense
competition and train while on tour.
This involves a lot of practice hours to
be devoted WITHOUT the physical
supervision of the coach
By employing our prototype, athletes
can make use of the readings recorded
for optimum shots to train themselves
while on tour.

WORKING MECHANISM
USING WICED SENSE
The coach records the ideal range of
readings of accelerometer, gyroscope
and magnetic compass by first playing
ideal shots while the prototype(WICED
Sense kit) is attached to the sports
equipment
The player can then practice his
strokes at any time and ensure that the
readings for his strokes are within the
ideal recorded range.
If the readings fall in the range then
the player is reassured of successful
technique.
If not, the player tries to correct his
technique until it falls within the ideal
range.
Refer video for practical use.

Accelerometer
This prototype can prove to be
immensely successful given the
low cost of the prototype, the
boom in IoT and the increased
demand for smart wearable
devices/smart applications of
sensors using Internet of Things
and Smart Networks.

DESCRIPTION

When practising a physical skill, reassurance

that our technique is good or feedback on
how to correct it, are crucial for motivation
and improvement.
Learning a technique so we perform correctly
without thinking requires lengthy (re)training
of muscle memory as well as studying the
underlying biomechanical principles,
especially if the technique is complex or we
need to break old habits.
Real-time feedback can help athletes when
learning what good and bad technique feels
like. As they may not be able to feel whether
the whole performance is correct and can not
stop to observe themselves, feedback is
required from a third party such as a coach.
The thoroughness and accuracy of this
traditional observation method are limited by
human ability and availability.
Supplementing coaches with sensor systems
that generate accurate feedback on any
technical aspect of the performance gives
athletes a fall back option.

ADVANTAGES

ADDITIONAL
BENEFITS
Automatic training of athletes allows coaches to
provide both vital feedback on how well they are
performing and on ways to improve their technique
without causing or aggravating injuries.
Good coaches will always be in demand but
automated analysis of body movements may offer
advantages over human coaching: world-class
coaches are often busy and expensive. They often
coach in squads to instil competition, giving each
athlete a fraction of their time during which they
might give unrepresentative and damaging
feedback. Even experienced coaches can not
simultaneously concentrate on all aspects of a
technique, can be biased towards athletes they
know, can fail to notice differences in a performer
they are used to watching and can become impaired
by factors such as fatigue.
An automated, surrogate system could analyze
athletes continuously whenever they train,
objectively focusing on any number of aspects
simultaneously. As motion capture systems
continue to develop, this hardware will become
much more affordable than a real person.

IMPROVED LEARNING CURVE

PERSPECTIVE

EVIDENCE

When athletes are interested in

semantically sophisticated
descriptions of a performance they
may be less comfortable
representing a performance as
digitized trajectories of points,
rather than watching their moving
flesh.
By automating analysis of the
trajectories, athletes could instead
be presented with comprehendible
and familiar ontological elements
from the domain of the sport,
which could also be used as
automatically constructed, low
bandwidth indices into recorded

There is circumstantial evidence

from the sports science community
that biomechanical theory can not
always justify coaches behaviour
and that the latter find difficultly in
explaining their judgments.
Supervised learning provides a
framework for directly associating
coach-level feedback with
performances recorded using a few
sensibly, but not precisely placed
sensors, whereas a traditional
(bio)-mechanical approach would
require explicit and precise
formulation of rules for every facet
of the technique.
