LO1:

The learner is able to demonstrate knowledge of the

basic concepts of information technology
AS1:Describe and explain the basic concepts of
computer configuration, hardware, software and
information technology
AS 1:We know this when the learner is able to:
 Create ,manage, and organise folders, subfolders and files
 Use electronic communication channels and methods
effectively
LO:3
The learner is able to apply end-user computer skills
and knowledge with a high level of accuracy,
proficiency, productivity and flexibility.
AS 1:We know this when the learner is able to:
 Demonstrate competence on the keyboard and in the use of
other input devices
 Achieve a basic level of accuracy within a set time limit
 Demonstrate the ability to use the recommended end-user
computer application.
AS1:We know this when the learner is able to:
 Identify competencies and skills necessary for the correct
use of the end-user computer application.
 Interpret instructions and apply knowledge and skills

necessary for the correct use of the end-user computer

application to present information in different formats.
 Transfer acquired end-user computer application skills to

new situations within given boundaries.

 Apply creative thinking to contribute towards problem

solving in the end-user environment.

 The learner will be able to :
 Describe all hardware components and
their uses
 Describe all the software and their uses
 Identify the main components of personal
computer
 Identify how the computer works
 Create simple presentable document.
 Research using an internet.
ICT means Information and Communication Technology
 It is an important enabler of wealth, growth and global competitiveness
and can empower people in developing countries to overcome
developmental obstacles.
 It refers to computer systems and additional electronic systems that
help to facilitate communication between computers .
 It means computer based systems.
 It is important in education i.e to be able to work with computer
technology.
 It can be used in:-assisted education e.g. reading programs
-computer literacy-to write letters, create mark sheet
-intergration education- where the school work is
done on a computer.
The computer is an electronic machine that helps you solve
your problems and do your work faster.
It consists of equipment called Hardware and programmes
called Software which processes data or information.
Software are instructions that enable the computer to
perform a task.
The computer works with information called data, which can
be text in a letter, numbers in a spreadsheet or a picture
or graphic image.
 Electronic device: – uses electronic
signals
 Input - entering data
 Operation – manipulating data
 Output – sending out/retrieving information
These are tangible components that you can physically touch
and see.
 Adding text and pictures by using the mouse
and keyboard.

.The micro processis the data and it is
saved in the temporary memory.
.The monitor shows what is happening and
the printer will give you a hard copy.
 Three storages of information:
 Diskettes
 Usb memory
 Flash drive
1.Keyboard
-The keyboard is more than just a typewriter. It contains all
the keys required typing letters, numbers, plus keys for
entering commands and moving around on the screen.
-It is divided into several main areas: function key
combination key
alphanumeric keypad
navigation arrows
numeric keypad
editing and navigation
keys
-The alphanumeric keypad is the most important part of any
keyboard.
-It contains the Alphabets and other punctuation marks used
in common documents.
 Function keys
 Editing and navigation keys
 Combination keys
 Alphanumeric keypad
 Navigation arrows
 Numeric arrows
 Numeric keypad
2. The mouse
-It works with a ball underneath that moves around and
directs the pointer.
 Point
 Click-Select something or place your cursor.

 Double click-Open an icon

 Click and drag- Move something from one point to

another.
 Right click-Get a shortcut menu to choose from

Other input devices are –microphone

--scanners
--touch screens
--joysticks
--barcode reader
--digital cameras
--memory stick
 The CPU is a tiny electronic chip within the system unit.
 It is installed on the main circuit board on the computer
called the motherboard.
 The CPU is often called the microprocessor or processor.
 The CPU is where information is processed within the
computer.
 It is usually called the “Brain” of the computer because it
is a processing device, without it the computer is dead.
 The monitor /screen /VDU (Visual Display Unit)
 Speakers
-A speaker is the audio output device for the computer.
-These speakers can produce stereo quality sound if the
computer has a sound card installed.
 Printers
-After a document is created on the computer, you can send it
to the printer for a printout, or a “hard copy”.
-Printers take data from its electronic form and print it onto
paper.
-Types of printers :Dot Matrix printers
Ink Jet
Laser printers
 A tower system
 Computers memory is like a memory of a person, it can
only hold a specific amount of information.
 The microprocessor keeps this temporary memory
 Data on a computer is stored in basic storage units called
bits(binary digits).
 These bits combine to form bytes.
 When 8 bits are grouped, a byte is formed.

• Intel CPU (microprocessor)

– Pentium IV or Newer and faster units
