Society
• Authors: Meena Kumari Rajani & M. S. Chandio
(Uni. Of Sindh, Pakistan)
• Objectives: to study the usage and effects of
Internet in the Pakistani society (teens, adults &
senior citizen) + relate it to the world users in
general
• Introduction by the authors:
• elaborating on technology in general
• mentioning how recent technology has
affected human life- socially and
economically,
• how technology has aided the daily
activities of human + the negative
consequences that entails the availability
of technology.

• A series of questionnaires from a population of
different demographical background
Figure 1
• 14% of the people do not chat at all
• 24% chat within 1 to 8 hours a week
• The percentage of those who chat more
than 8 hours a week is not significant

Figure 2-4:
Internet’s influence towards the
Pakistanis
• Keep in connection with friends and family
• Slight contribution to the understanding of other
cultures and global issues.
• Helpful with educational and professional field
• Staying online reduces time of studies.
• Least influence towards the community’s physical
activities, learning, social gatherings, and
newspapers.

Other findings
• The most performed activities are chatting and
emailing.
• E-shopping is not fully introduced in the Pakistani
society.
• Specific Effects of Internet Use to the Pakistanis:
• The youngsters are the majority who use the Internet
for enjoyment.
• Ease of interacting with the opposite sex through the
Internet anonymously.
• Children tend to adopt abusive language through their
online friends
• Depression is also one of the consequences of
excessive internet use.

Authors’ Recommendation

• Parents should be computer literate

• Computers’ location should be observable by
the parents
• Parents and teachers should switch their
children’s attention towards beneficial
activities
• Senior citizens should also be literate in
computers
• Special websites should specially be designed
for elderly people

Authors’ Conclusion

• Users of Internet chatting in Pakistan are

significant
• Awareness and training programmes should be
developed to enable parents to be computer
literate.
• The Internet brings much benefit to the users
• to keep in touch with their friends and
families,
• to enhance knowledge, for teaching and
research purposes,
• to understand and learn of others’ cultures.

Article Critique
• Overall, the article is difficult to follow.
• The flow of the points is also somewhat frantic.
• There are grammatical errors that are apparent
throughout the article,
• The contradicting statements given from the
authors,
• The sentences were also awkwardly constructed
and do not demonstrate an academic article of
good quality.

Article Critique
• The major grammatical errors apparent in the article are as follows:
“Despite this, most of the female interviewers found internet…”
• “In this study, 80% people have declined the effect of internet on their routine
physical activities.”
• “Only 24% people do Internet chatting ranges from 1-8 hours in a week.”

• The following is one of the contradicting statements:

• “The excessive use of Internet isolates the user from real world and find
less time to spend with their friends and families. Excessive use of
Internet may lead to a person in depression. This happens with those
who are already in depression and finds Internet as an escape.”

Error of Reference Use

• Wellman & Frank, McAdam, and Putman’s articles

which talk about the decline in civic
engagement and social participation in the
United States
• The researchers have conveniently assumed that the
Internet is a result of this decline
• From the title of the studies, it shows no indication
that they are related to the Internet, they were more
on the specific topics under ‘social capital’
• As an empirical study,
the authors should
provide a complete
elaboration.

• “Thus the ratio of

chatting using
Internet is not
large as far as
time is
concerned. Only
24% people do
Internet chatting
ranges from 1-8
hours in a week.”

• The phrase
“adoptingother
cultures” is
inappropriate to be
used, due to the fact
that cultures cannot
simply be adopted
through virtual
world, perhaps the
word “influence” is
more suitable.

• The expectation of the results’ analysis and
presentation of the article itself is disappointing.
• The authors should have a stronger stance of the
topic.
• This is suggested due to the fact that the findings
on the study are not explained with complete
justification, leaving the readers confused and
unable to understand some of the figures of the
findings.
• The article absolutely needs thorough editing as
well as reconstruction.
• The findings, as mentioned earlier, should also be
more elaborated in detail.

1- The Prophet (PBUH) says:

“ ‫“ كلكم راع وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته‬

•“You are a shepherd and each of you responsible

for his flock” (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)
•A man is the shepherd of the people of his house

and he is responsible. A woman is the shepherd of

the house of her husband and she is responsible.
Each of you is a shepherd and each is responsible
for his or her flock.

2- Islam

did not prohibit woman interacting with the outside world ….
It’s just a matter of culture … because Sayidatuna A’iasha contributed
in Islam such as narrating the ahadeeth.

• (Hadith Riwayat Al-Tirmizi from Abi Barzah Nadhlah Ibn Abid Al-Aslami)

•Allah SWT will ask us in the hereafter about 4

things:

• Our Life (what we have done)

• Our Knowledge (how we put it to practice)
• Our Money (how we earned and spent them)
• Our Body (how we make use of it)
To relate these four things to the use of the Internet, we

can ask ourselves these questions:

– Life: Am I spending a lot of time in front of my PC

and ignoring many other important things which
can’t wait, like perform the prayers, help my
parents, and etc?

– Knowledge: Am I using Internet to improve my

knowledge? Do I teach others whatever I have
learnt to benefit them, i.e. through forums, blogs,
chat rooms?

– Money: Am I spending my money to just get access to

games without getting any benefit from that? (by
the way it is ok to buy games and have some fun but
there are people who get addicted to something and
they start spending money without thinking!)

– Body: How many hours do you usually sit on the chair

to use the PC? If it is too much without taking
breaks to drink water or move your limbs then you
