GRANULATING

DEFINITION
Granulation is the process of collect
ing particles together by creating bonds
between them. Bonds are formed by co
mpression or by using a binding agent

DEFINITION
Granulatingthe act or process of fo
rming or crystallizing into grains

Granules typically have a size range b

etween 0.2 and 4.0mm depending on the
ir subsequent use.

DEFINITION
Granulator
-equipment that could take a larger c

omponent and reduce it to a grain sized

output
-A machine that forms material intog
ranules

Types of Granulator
Dry Granulation
uid solution

without using a liq

Wet Granulation

addition of a liqu
id solution (with or without binder)

Dry Granulation
Primary powder particles are aggrega
ted under high pressure
Roller Compaction
Powder is squeezed between two rollers
to produce sheet of material
Slugging
Large tablets produce in heavy duty tab
let press

Wet Granulation
includes Fluid beds, tumbling drums & pa
ns, and mixer-granulators
Mechanism
Wetting, nucleation and binder distribu
tion
Consolidation and growth
Attrition and breakage

Fluidized bed Granulation

Granulation and drying in the same equipment
controlled by moisture content of the bed
Too high moisture content will defluidize the
bed and in too low moisture, no agglomeration
will occur
Granules obtained are more porous than thos
e obtained from shear mixers

Fluidized bed Granulation

Tumbling Granulation
Particles are set in motion by the tumbli
ng action caused by the balance betwee
n gravity and centrifugal forces
Includes discs, drums, pans and a ran
ge of similar equipment

Characteristics of tumbling granula

tors
Product granule size in the range of 2 to 20m
m
Not suitable for producing very small granule
s
Good for producing high density balls or pall
ets
Capable of handling very large throughputs
Extensively used in mineral processing and fe
rtilizer granulation

Disc Granulator
Rotating disc with a rim to hold the tum
bling granules
Powder feed continuously fed to the dis
c, typically at the edge of the rotating g
ranulator bed
Liquid binder is added through a series
of single fluid nozzles distributed acros
s the face of the bed

Disc Granulator

Rotating Drums
mix materials by tumbling them in a rota
ting cylinder
take advantage of gravity to tumble, mi
x, and homogenize the wastes
