THE INDOLENCE

OF THE
FILIPINOS.

The indolence of the Filipinos.

Also known as Sobra La Indolencia de

los Filipinos.
The word Indolence is defined as a little love
for work and lack of energy and inclination to
laziness.
Rizal published Sobra la Indolencia de los
Filipinos on July 15 to Sept. 15, 1890 in Five
installments through the La Solidaridad.
La Solidaridad is the official newspaper of
the illustrados (the enlightened ones)

Chapters of
The Indolence of the
Filipinos.

Chapter 1: ADMITTING THE EXISTENCE OF

INDOLENCE.

Rizal admits that indolence exist among

the Filipinos, Hot climate, pointed by Rizal
is a reasonable predisposition for
indolence.
He also told us that an hours work under
the Philippine sun is equivalent to a days
work in temperate regions.
But he also pointed out that if a person can
adapt ones climate. Then, it will be easy for
them to work.

Chapter: 2 INDOLENCE OF THE

CHRONIC ILLNESS.

Rizal says that an illness will worsen if

the wrong treatment is given.
Even before the Spaniards arrived, Rizal
argues, the early Filipinos were already
carrying out trade within the provinces
and other neighboring countries; and,
some are speaking in Spanish.
Rizal ends up asking why Filipinos
forget their past?

Chapter: 3 WARS, INSSURECTIONS,

EXPEDITION AND INVASION.

Invasions have brought disorder to the

communities. Chaos has been
widespread, and destruction is rampant.
Many men have been sent into
shipyards to construct vessels and other
natives have gone into mountains thats
why farms have been neglected.
This are the reasons why Rizal called
the indolence of Filipinos.

Chapter : 4 DEATH OF TRADE IN

THE PHILIPPINES

Filipinos, According to Rizal are not

responsible for their misfortunes.
Because of the abuse of the Spaniards
many abandoned their fields. Business are
monopolized by many government officials.
Because of the friars many were fooled. Like
if you dont donate your property to church
you will not go to heaven.
This are some reasons for deterioration of
values among Filipinos.

Chapter: 5 LIMITED TRAINING

AND EDUCATION.

According to Rizal two factors can reduce

indolence.
First is separate Filipinos with Spaniards.
Because, Filipinos does not receive the same
amount of training and education with that of
the Spaniards.
Second, lack of national sentiment among with
them. They submit foreign culture and do
everything to imitate them.
Solution according to Rizal, would be Education
and Liberty.

Summary:

Through Rizals deep insights of social

anthropology, he was able to analyze
the factors causing the Filipinos
indolence. According to him, that was
not due to the climate or the absence of
stimuli to work but due to the hardships
or barriers out of the political and social
systems during those times.
