ARINC 429 DATA BUS

AERONAUTICAL RADIO
INCORPORATION
describe the data
communication between the
systems used primarily on
commercial transport aircraft.
The documents are prepared
by the Airlines Electronic
Engineering Committee
(AEEC) and published by
Aeronautical Radio Inc.

ARINC 429 Digital Information Transfer System

(DITS) Low speed
Adopted by the Industry in 1977
It works on the data rate of 12-14.5 Kbits/sec or 100
Kbits/sec

Advantages
Simplex Data Bus
Low cost
Integrity of installations - continuous integration of systems

1.Equipment Interconnection
Simplex Data Bus using only one transmitter and up to 20
data receivers
They are connected by shielded & twisted pair of wires

The shields are grounded at both ends along the length of

the cable
The shields are kept as short as possible

Avionics System Evolution

Avionics Bus - ARINC-429

Single Source Multiple Sink: Half duplex - One

Transmitting
equipment sends data to a number of
receiving equipment (up to 20).

2.Modulation
Return-To-Zero (RZ) modulation is used
Voltage levels are used for this scheme

Typical ARINC 429 word format

A typical 32-bit ARINC 429 word has five
parts:

8-bit Label
Data area
parity bit
Source/Destination Identifier (SDI)
Sign/Status Matrix (SSM)

Direction of Information Flow

Information flow only from Tx to Rx

A separate data bus is used for each direction when

the two way data transmission is required

The only two parts of the word need are the

Information Identifier (Label) and the parity bit
Source/ Destination Identifier(SDI)
Two functions:
To identify which source in the multisystem is
transmitting the data
To direct which sink in the multisystem should
recognize the data
Sign/ Status Matrix (SSM)

The Sign/Status Matrix (SSM) is used for two

purposes:
To provide a sign(+/-) or Direction of flow(Data)
To provide source equipment status information to
the sinks or viz,,,

VARIOUS DATA BUSES

ARINC 629
Designed and Developed by Boeing
Company
First deployed on Boeing 777 Jet-liner
Boeing worked with ARINC to create and
release Specification
Specification was first adopted by AEEC in
1989

ARINC 629 PROTOCOL

Supports a Multi-transmitter and Bidirectional approach to digital Data

communications

Employs a protocol referred to as

DATAC (Digital Autonomous Terminal
Access Control)

ARINC 629 DATA BUS

Time Division Multiplex
Linear Bus
Multiple Transmitter Access
2 Mbps Data Rate

Because more than one terminal may

begin to transmit when the Bus is free,
a method of avoiding clashes must be
used
Method used by ARINC 629 is called
CSMA/CA
CSMA/CA is achieved by use of three
timers
- Transmit Interval (TI)
- Terminal Gap (TG)
- Synchronization Gap (SG)
