Traffic control device :


Defenition :
A sign, signal, marking, or other device used to
regulate, warn, or guide traffic, placed on, over, or
adjacent to a street, highway, pedestrian facility,
or shared-use path by authority of a public agency
having jurisdiction.

Function :
The main purpose of a traffic control device is to
provide information to road users so they can
safely move along a highway, street, pedestrian
facility, or bikeway. The five basic criteria of a
traffic control device, as defined by the Manual on
Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), are to do
the following:

Fulfill a need.

Command attention.
Convey a clear, simple meaning.
Command respect from road users.
Give adequate time for response.

Types of device :

Regulatory signs are traffic signs used to convey traffic rules and
regulations such as intersection controls, weight limit, speed limit, one
way, no parking and others. These signs are generally rectangular in
shape and uses white, black and red/or as their primary colors.

Warning signs are traffic signs that are used to warn road users
about a potential danger. These signs are usually diamond in shape
and, except for temporary traffic control signs, have black legends and
borders on a yellow background. Work zone signs have orange
backgrounds, and incident management signs have pink backgrounds
Examples of warning signs are crosswalk signs. curve warning signs,
intersection ahead signs, flagger signs, workers signs, or road
machinery signs.

Guide signs help road users navigate to their destination. These


signs are generally rectangular in shape and have white text on green
backgrounds. When a guide sign provides temporary guidance due to
a work zone, it will have a black legend and border on an orange
background. Examples of guide signs are street name signs,
destination and distance signs, And place name signs. Work zone
guide signs include detour markers, length of work signs, and end road
work signs.

on a fixed or portable support whereby a specific
message is conveyed by means of words or
symbols.

The sign is placed or erected for the purpose of


regulating, warning, or guiding vehicular,
pedestrian, or bicycle traffic.

Advantage of road studs :


The reasons for having road studs is that they
provide visibility day and night, regardless of the
weather, they provide audible and tactile feedback
to the driver when theyre driven over and, using
the different colours , they tell drivers which side of
the road is left and right and indicate the direction
the road is heading.
Disadvantage of road studs :
They do have some disadvantages, though: they
are more expensive to install and have ongoing
costs. If they are not maintained they can become
loose and dangerous .
They are not able to be used on unpaved roads.
In urban areas the noise of vehicles travelling over
road studs can be annoying for local residents.

Signs shall be defined by their function as
follows:
A. Regulatory signs give notice of traffic laws or
regulations.
B. Warning signs give notice of a situation that
might not be readily apparent.
C. Guide signs show route designations,
destinations, directions, distances, services,
points of interest, and other geographical,
recreational, or cultural information
