DEFINITION OF

ATHEROSCLEROSIS

Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries,


is a
condition in which plaque builds up
inside the arteries.
Plaque is made of cholesterol, fatty
substances, cellular waste products, calcium
and fibrin (a clotting material in the blood).

SYMTOMS OF
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
Chest pain (angina)
Pain in the leg, arm, and anywhere else
that an artery is blocked.
Shortness of breath.
Fatigue.
Confusion (if the blockage affects
circulation to the brain)
Muscle weakness in the legs from lack of
circulation.
