RENEWABLE AND NONRENEWABLE ENERGY

SOURCES

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF ENERGY SOURCES.

THEY ARE :RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

TIDAL ENERGY
WIND ENERGY
BIOMASS ENERGY
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES

PETROLEUM
NATURAL GAS
COAL
NUCLEAR ENERGY

WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES?

An organic natural resourcewhich can replenish to overcome usage
and consumption, either through biological reproduction or other
naturally recurring processes.Sources that we can use over and over
again.
IT IS FREE ,GREEN AND CLEAN
SOLAR ENERGY AND WATER ---be used as AN ALTERNATIVE

WIND ENERGY

SOLAR ENERGY
radiantlightandheatfrom thesunharnessed using a
range of ever-evolving technologies
This energy can be collected and converted in a few
different ways.
WIND ENERGY
The movement of the atmosphere is driven by
differences of temperature at the Earth's surface
due to varying temperatures of the Earth's surface
when lit by sunlight.
Wind energy can be used to pump water or generate
electricity
BIOMASS ENERGY
organic matter that has stored energy through the
process of photosynthesis.
As plants grow, they use the process of
photosynthesis to thrive and grow. The
photosynthesis process generates energy and when
burned, plants release their energy. Dead plant
matter and residue can also transfer into a renewable
energy source by applying heat.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Geothermal is the process of transferring heat
from underground steam to heat up water
Can use to generate electrical energy
TIDAL ENERGY
Generated by the tides of oceans and seas.
It is used by tidal power station to generate
electrical energy
HYDROPOWER ENERGY
Harnessing power from water is another way to
generate renewable energy.
The force of gravity and the flow of water
work together to generate electricity
This type of energy is extracted from the
gravitational pull of water falling from a higher
source, such as using a waterfall to generate
energy.

NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

Non-renewable energy sources are
those sources of energy that cannot be
replenished after use,
They are used up much faster than they
can be replaced.
The formation of non-renewable energy
sources such as petroleum, natural gas
and coal takes a very long time.

COAL
Most abundant fossil fuel resource.
HARD, BLACK, ROCK-LIKE SUBSTANCE
Burned in power stations to generate electricity
as a source of heat for industry
Burning of coal can produce a lot of carbon dioxide
and some other toxic gases that can pollute the
environment
PETROLEUM
Petroleum, crude oil is formed in a similar way as
coal, but it becomes a liquid trapped between layers
of rocks
Can be made by into gas, petrol, kerosene, diesel, oils
Used in homes for cooking and heating, and in
factories as a source of heat energy
Used in power stations to generate electricity and to
provide fuel for transport
Producing petrochemicals such as plastics

NATURAL GAS
Formed in the same way as petroleum and
trapped between layers of rock
Natural gas is trapped, compressed and piped
into homes to be used in stoves and hot water
systems
LPG (LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS)is made
from petroleum .It is used for cooking and
heating at homes, factories.
Can be used as an alternative fuel to petrol
NUCLEAR ENERGY
Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
Hydrogen is usually used to produce nuclear
energy . This process is known as nuclear fusion
Uranium is usually used to produce nuclear
energy. This process is known as nuclear fission
It is released in many forms such as HEAT,
LIGHT, SOUND and RADIOACTIVE RAYS

THE USE OF SOLAR ENERGY

1)

Solar energy is obtained directly from the Sun. It is a

renewable energy source which can be continuously used.

2)

Heat energy and light energy are produced when nuclear

reactions take place in the core of the Sun.

3)

Solar energy is used to

(a) heat water in homes
(b)produce electrical energy

4)

Solar cells absorb light energy and change it into

electrical energy. Solar cells are used in calculators,
watches and satellites.

WHY we need to converse energy?

We use energy every day for lighting, cooking, heating and
cooling rooms, transportation, entertainment and manufacturing.
Most of the energy that we use comes from non-renewable
energy sources such as fossil fuels.
It is necessary to preserve fossil fuels( coal, petroleum and
natural gas) for the future and to encourage the use of more
renewable energy sources from the Sun, water and wind.
Renewable energy creates very little pollution and is not likely
to run out in the future.

THE IMPORTANCE TO CONSERVE ENERGY

Save Money: Usage of fluorescent bulbs , solar electricity may
cost expensive initially but prove to be cost-effective in the
long run. Many energy efficiency and conservation measures are
better investments than the stock market or bank interest.

Reduce Carbon-dioxide: If Non-Renewable resources are used up to

the limit they may also help in reducing the carbon-dioxide. Pollution
from nuclear and coal power plants cause diseases like asthma,
emphysema etc.
Climate Change: Due to increase in the rate of these resources it also
affect the climate greatly, Drought, Severe storms, floods, land loss,
erosion of soil and heat deaths are few examples of climate change.
Ozone Layer Depletion: Ozone layer in the atmosphere protect us
from ultraviolet rays from reaching the earth thus, making life on the
earth possible.
Global Warming: With so much dependence on Non renewable
sources, global warmingis taking place all over the world and the result
which is glaciers are melting which is causing the rise in the sea level.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY

Turn off lights when you leave the room

Take advantage of sunlight, if you can. During the day, work in rooms with
windows where you don't need artificial light.
Turn your refrigerator down.
Clean or replaceair filtersas recommended. Energy is lost when air
conditioners and hot-air furnaces have to work harder to draw air through
dirty filters. Cleaning a dirty air conditioner filter can save 5 percent of the
energy used.
Whenever possible,walk, bike, car pool
Reduce the amount of waste you produce
Plantshade treesand paint your house a light color if you live in a warm
climate, or a dark color if you live in a cold climate.
Create a "bright room" in your household. When the sun goes down, turn on
the lights in just one central room in your house, and encourage your family
to spend the evening hours there
Replace electric lights with candles.
Power Down Your Computer:Enable "power management" on all computers
and make sure to turn them off when not in use.

Efficient use of energy

1.

Energy efficiency is the use of technology that requires

less energy to perform the same task.

2.

When we use energy to perform a task, not all the energy is

changed into useful energy. Part of the energy may be
wasted as heat energy.
Example:
An ordinary light bulb changes only 5% of electrical
energy into light energy. 95% of the electrical energy is
lost as heat energy.

3.

Efficient energy use can be achieved by replacing the

ordinary light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb
that uses less energy to produce the same amount of light
energy.

WAYS WE CAN USE ENERGY

EFFICIENTLY
Using energy-saving electrical
appliances
Using fluorescent lamps which are
more energy efficient
Using public transport like buses and
light rail transit to go to work
instead of using own car alone
Car pool help to reduce the use of
energy
New building should be making use of
solar technology and making
maximum use of natural light
