The geo-climatic condition of

Meghalaya supports the growth of


spices mainly
1) Ginger
2) Turmeric
3) Black Pepper
4) Chillies
Bay leaf (Tezpatta) is also grown in
some parts of Meghalaya.

Meghalaya is the second

in India
In addition to local types
namely Khasi Local and
Tura Local, considerable
area has been brought
under selected type Nadia
Nadia variety is low in
fibre content
The volatile oil content
in dry ginger powder of

Chillies

Chilli plant is a small bush that can grow to a height of 4 feet


These chillies are characterized by their extremely small size
when mature (2-3 cm) and very high pungency.
It can be used in commercial market as well as for
processing

Black Pepper
Mainly grown in Meghalaya on the Khasi Hills of the State
The major varieties grown here are Panniyur 1 and Panniyur
2.
About 400 MT black pepper is produced by the state annually
where there is an estimated surplus of 380 MT.

Spices & NERAMAC


NERAMAC assists in the procurement and marketing of two
main spices of Meghalaya i.e. Ginger & turmeric
Some of the initiatives of NERAMAC for procurement and
marketing of ginger can be listed as follows
1) Ginger was procured from individual farmers in Nongpoh,
Porsoshan, Tura, etc. at prices prevailing in respective markets
of the districts
2) Procured ginger was marketed mainly in wholesale market
Machkhowa, Guwahati and terminal market of Kolkatta
3) MOU was signed by NERAMAC with West Garo Hills Community
Resource Management Society-IFAD, Tura, Meghalaya to
procure ginger from the farmers of Tura helping them to market
their produce.
WGHCRMS-IFAD, Tura agreed to facilitate collection of
Ginger from various places around Tura and bring to the
collection centres for procurement

4) MOU was signed with Commission Agents in Kolkatta that


NERAMAC will supply green/raw ginger from Meghalaya to the
agents to sell at prices determined as per the terminal market
price of Kolkata
5) MOU was signed by NERAMAC with Khawkylla Community
Resource Management Society-IFAD, Nongstoin for procurement
and marketing of ginger
6) MOU was signed by NERAMAC (1st party) with Strawberry
Growers Association, Ri-bhoi District, Meghalaya (2 nd party) and
Meghalaya State Agricultural Marketing Board and District
Horticulture Officer (3rd party) wherein it was agreed that 2 nd party
will offer fresh and clean ginger from the farmers of the
surrounding villages within Bhoirymbong to 1 st party at prices
prevailing in Bhoirymbong market.
3rd party would monitor in case of any discrepancy, irregularity or
misunderstanding during procurement.
7) NERAMAC provided marketing support to M/S Meghalaya Ginger
Processing Unit, Umsning
