INTRODUCTION
When the people think of automobile performance,
they normally think of
Torque
Horse power
Acceleration
Mileage etc.
But all the power generated by the engine is
useless if the driver can not control the vehicle.
Thats why automobile engineer turns their
attention towards the Suspension system.
Vehicle suspension system is responsible for driving
comfort and safety. So suspension is one of the
major system in any automobile vehicle.

OBJECTIVES
A smooth ride
Accurate steering
Make contact between type and road
Support the weight of a vehicle
Maintain acceptable tire wear
safety
Reduce the effect of shock force.

TYPES
OF
SUSPENSION SYSTEM
Dependent suspension system
Semi-dependent suspension system
Independent suspension system

DEPENDENT SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Motion of a wheel on
one side of the vehicle
is dependent on the
motion of its partner
on other side.
Rarely used in modern
passenger cars.
Used in commercial
and off highway
vehicle.

When one wheel hits a bump or drops into a hole, due to

solid axle connection both left and right wheels are
moved.

SEMI-DEPENDENT SUSPENSION SYSTEM

The rigid connection between the pair of wheel is
replaced by the complaint link.
A beam which can bend and flex providing
positional control.
Simple in construction but lack scope for design
flexibility.

INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Motion of wheel pairs is independent, so that a
disturbance of one wheel is not transmitted
directly to its partner.
Better ride and handling.

COMPONENT
OF
SUSPENSION SYSTEM
Springs
Shock
absorber

SPRING
Springs are elastic bodies (generally metal)
that can be twisted, pulled, or stretched by
some force. They can return to their original
shape when the force is released.
In other words it is also termed as a resilient
member.

CLASSIFICATION OF SPRINGS
1) Helical springs:
a) Tension helical spring (Extension spring)
b) Compression helical spring
c) Torsion spring
d) Spiral spring
2) Leaf springs

LEAF SPRING
Sometimes it is also called as a semi-elliptical spring, as it takes
the form of a slender arc shaped length of spring steel of
rectangular cross section.
The center of the arc provides the location for the axle, while the
tie holes are provided at either end for attaching to the vehicle
body.
It provides dampness and springing function.

SHOCK ABSORBER
Limits spring compression-extension movements to
smooth the vehicles ride.
Without shock absorbers, the vehicle would continue
to bounce up and down long after striking dip or hump
in the road.

PURPOSE OF SHOCK ABSORBER

The major purpose of any shock is to control ride
and handling. Standard shock absorbers do not
support the weight of a vehicle.
The springs support the weight of the vehicle.
The shock absorbers control the actions and
reactions of the springs.
Shock absorbers are also called dampers.

A) Movement of the vehicle is supported by spring without damping device.

B) Spring action is damped with a shock absorber.
C) The function of any shock absorber is to dampen the movement or action
of a spring, similarto using a liquid to control th movement of a weight on a
spring.

COMPLETE VIEW

PRECAUTIONS
Push down on one corner of vehicles body and
release. Count the no of times the vehicle rebounds.
If it is not more then two rebounds then suspension
system is good.
Check for sign for leakage if oily and wet , replace
it.
Compressed spring has tremendous amount of store
enery so change it very carefully.
If any kind of play found in any joint then tightened
it properly.
Always grease all the grease points.
Move the wheel side by side, there should be no
play.

CONCLUSION
The effective design of a suspension system as per
the requirement is import for the all automobile
engineer.

Its provided the accurate steering and positional

accuracy also.
