'No stadium, no match' - FIFA issues threat to Brazil World
Cup city
By Shasta Darlington, CNN and Sarah Holt
January 22, 2014 -- Updated 1022 GMT (1822 HKT)

(CNN) -- There are less than five months to go until the World Cup begins in
Brazil but the clock is ticking for another of the global football fiesta's host
cities.
Curitiba, the capital of the southern state of Parana, is so behind with its
stadium renovations that FIFA could strip it of its host status.
On a trip to inspect the venue Tuesday, Jerome Valcke, secretary general of
the sport's governing body, told reporters: "You cannot organize games if you
do not have a stadium -- that's obvious.
"If you don't have a stadium then you cannot have four games taking place
here. So that's why again there is this emergency situation."
FIFA has now given builders in the city of Curitiba a new deadline of February
18 to show a marked improvement in the stadium.
The Arena de Baixada venue, home to Atletico Paranaense, is being expanded
for the World Cup with new seats added alongside the pitch and capacity
raised to 40,000.

The Future of Corporate Social Responsibility

Abstract
This paper offers a contemporary look at that part of corporate community involvement
which in recent years has become known as 'corporate social responsibility'. The author
adopts a broader perspective than Michael Porter's prominent article on 'corporate
philanthropy'. Here, the voluntary and discretionary expenditures of business on social and
environmental projects are seen to be more closely aligned with corporate risk management
and reputation-building than with corporate strategy. After some observations about
terminology and philosophical attitudes, the paper notes the growing pressure on business to
undertake discretionary social and environmental expenditures and to account publicly for
such activities through institutionalized annual reporting. Some recent international initiatives
to foster and popularize corporate social responsibility are summarized and their features
briefly assessed, as is one attempt to measure corporate social responsibility. The paper seeks
to illuminate the 'hidden' issues in this increasingly popular contemporary movement. The
most important of these are to identify who ultimately pays for such expenditures and who
ultimately makes decisions about them. At the same time it is noted that the capabilities of
private business in the social arena may sometimes exceed those of government. The paper
concludes with a number of judgements about the nature and legitimacy of this contemporary
development and also about its future.
Keywords: corporate social responsibility, triple bottom line, corporate philanthropy,
sustainability reporting
