Russia was having internal problems and

the government was overthrown in 1917 Russian Revolution.
The new government led by LENIN
immediately pulled Russia out of the First
World War.
Women also played a part in the war ? As
nurses, drivers and even spies at the front
line.

Russia out in 1917,

but USA declared
war in 1917 as a
result of the sinking
of the Lusitania.
Their troops
reached Europe by
1918.

As a result of the work women did during

the war they were rewarded with the right
to vote in 1920.

On the eleventh hour

of the eleventh day
1918 the war came to
an end.

And so the men came home...

But of course not all returned

Many who did return home were also very

badly injured.

Just as the war was ending a fatal

epidemic hit Europe - Spanish Flu ? killing
millions of people world wide.

Not only were lives devastated but land,

villages, towns, farms, factories, especially
in France and Belgium, were all left in
ruins.

As a result the map of Europe changed..

Treaty of Versailles
blamed Germany for
causing the First World
War and as a result
they had to pay for
ALL DAMAGE caused
during the war.
In Germany the
people were furious.

League of Nations was created so countries could

discuss their problems rather than resorting to conflict
Although it wasnt a success it was the forerunner for
today's United Nations.

During the 1920?s and 1930?s

USA stayed out of European
affairs.
At the same time Britain and
France wanted to avoid war at
all costs. This developed into
the policy of APPEASEMENT.
In the 1930s Britain gave
Hitler what he wanted in order
to keep the peace.

Of course not everyone was happy about

the end of the war and certainly not about
the Treaty of Versailles..

Hitler came to power in 1933 and one of the

things he promised was to get revenge for the
Treaty of Versailles and what it did to Germany.
Many historians would therefore argue that
Hitlers rise to power and the Second World War
1939-45 happened because of the First World War.

But Hitler wasnt the

only one to emerge as
a result of the First
World War.
In Italy Benito
Mussolini came to
power in 1922 and
ruled Italy as a
dictator.

Women took on mens jobs as they

joined up to serve at the Front.
A Peace Treaty was signed at
Versailles, Paris in June, 1919.
Lands, villages and towns in Belgium
and France were destroyed.
Millions of soldiers were killed in battle.
Food shortages became worse in the
last days of the war.

The rise to power of Hitler and

the Nazis in the early 1930s.
The outbreak of the Second
World War 1939.
Bodies of First World War
soldiers are still being
discovered today in France
and Belgium.

The USA joined the Allies in
1941 in 2WW.
