About BEE

The Government of India set up Bureau of Energy

Efficiency (BEE) in 2002 under the provisions of
the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
The mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is
to assist in developing policies and strategies
within the overall framework of the Energy
Conservation Act, 2001 with the primary objective
of reducing energy intensity of the Indian
economy. This will be achieved with active
participation of all stakeholders, resulting in
accelerated and sustained adoption of energy
efficiency in all sectors.

Functions of BEE

Develop minimum energy performance standards

and labeling design for equipment and appliances.
Develop specific Energy Conservation Building
Codes
Develop specific energy consumption norms
Certify Energy Managers and Energy Auditors.
Define the manner and periodicity of mandatory
energy audits.
Develop reporting formats on energy consumption
and action taken on the recommendations of the
energy auditors

Schemes of BEE

SME and Large Industrial Sector.

House hold lighting.

Commercial Buildings.

Standards and Labeling of appliances.

Demand side management in agriculture.

Energy use trends

Pattern of Energy use in Households.

Commercial Buildings.

Agriculture demand side

Standards & Labeling of

Microwave Oven

Standards and Labeling

Scheme launched in May,2006.

The Objective is to provide an informed

choice about the energy saving and cost
saving potential.

The Standards and labelling program for end

use appliances and equipments provides for
self certification by the manufacturers based
on the standards issued by BEE (STAR rating).

Appliances presently under the

Scheme

Frost Free (No-Frost) Refrigerator

Direct Cool Refrigerator
Tubular Florescent Lamps
Room Air-conditioners
Distribution Transformers
Induction Motors
Agricultural Pump Sets
Ceiling Fans
LPG Stoves
Electric Geysers
Color TV

Bureau of Indian Standard

According to BIS standard the microwave

oven should be operated at a voltage not
exceeding 253 V ac, single phase 50 Hz and
under ISM bands of (915 50) MHz or (2450
50) MHz .
This standard does not apply to:
appliances designed exclusively for industrial
purposes;
appliances intended to be used in locations
where special conditions prevail
appliances for medical purposes.

Project Details (cont.)

Standardization and labeling program

of Microwave oven in different
countries.
Test standards and performance
tests for standard and labeling of
Microwave oven.
Determination of microwave power
output , efficiency calculation and
heating performance.

Conclusion

We proposed some energy

performance test given by BIS which
can be helpful for BEE to choose
Microwave oven as a future product
of standards and labelling
programme.
