Network Overview
STI

College Fairview is a 4-building educational establishment

that has a computer network of over 300 computers. Its
computer network consist of fiber optic cables, 2 cisco router,
unmanaged switches, managed switches, servers for the
computer labs, files and backups, windows active directory,
time keeping, portal, library and the omega server. It also has
3 Internet Service Provider: 4 mbps Bayantel, 4mbps PLDT and
10mbps PLDT which is divided into the network at the
administrators discretion. It is arranged in as a mesh network.
Its network architecture is the Client/Server Architecture and is
classified as a Local area network (LAN) in the network
classification basis. Its network uses cables (guided
transmission media) in transmitting data. Its network uses
class A and class C for its internet protocol.

Network Definition
The

network type that is used in STI

College Fairview is the mesh network. A
mesh network is a network topology in
which each node relays data for the
network. All mesh nodes cooperate in
the distribution of data in the network.

Advantage of Mesh Network

A

broken node wont distract the

transmission of data in a mesh network.
Each node is connected to several other
nodes which make it easier to relay
data. A broken device will be ignored by
the signals and will then find a new one
that is connected with the node.

Advantage of Mesh Network

Additional

devices in a mesh topology

will not affect its network connection.
Hence it will improve the traffic in the
network. Mesh topology makes a large
data center that simulates useful
information to its nodes.

Advantage of Mesh
Network
A

mesh topology can handle high

amount of network traffic since every
additional device into the network is
considered a node. Interconnected
devices can simultaneously transfer
data smoothly and will not complicate
the network connection.

Disadvantages of Mesh
Network
Maintaining

mesh networks can be very

hard to manage. It requires continuous
supervision because of the redundancy
present in the network. Skilled network
administrators will find it easy to
manage this kind of topology.

Disadvantages of Mesh
Network
Due

to the fact that building this

topology requires a lot of devices it will
need a lot of capital to invest in. It may
be expensive but the service it provides
you will definitely give back the invested
capital.

Network Components

Fiber Optics cable

An

optical fiber cable is a cable

containing one or more optical fibers
that are used to carry light. The optical
fiber elements are typically individually
coated with plastic layers and contained
in a protective tube suitable for the
environment where the cable will be
deployed.

Router
A

router is a networking device that

forwards data packets between
computer networks. Routers perform the
"traffic directing" functions on the
Internet. A data packet is typically
forwarded from one router to another
through the networks that constitute the
internetwork until it reaches its
destination node.

Unmanaged Switches

An unmanaged switch works right out

of the box. It's not designed to be
configured, so you don't have to worry
about installing or setting it up correctly.
Unmanaged switches have less network
capacity than managed switches.

Managed Switches

A managed network switch is

configurable, offering greater flexibility
and capacity than an unmanaged
switch. You can monitor and adjust a
managed switch locally or remotely, to
give you greater network control.

Server
A

server is a computer program or a

machine capable of accepting requests
from clients and responding to them.
Their purpose may be to share data or
hardware and software resources among
clients.

Client Server Architecture

The

clientserver architecture of
computing is a distributed application
structure that partitions tasks or
workloads between the providers of a
resource or service, called servers, and
service requesters, called clients.

Local Area Network

A

local area network (LAN) is a

computer network that interconnects
computers within a limited area such as
a residence, school, laboratory, or office
building.

Internet Service
Provider
An

Internet service provider (ISP) is an

organization that provides services for
accessing, using, or participating in the
Internet. Internet service providers may
be organized in various forms, such as
commercial, community-owned,
non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.

Internet Protocol Address

An

Internet Protocol address (IP address)

is a numerical label assigned to each
device (e.g., computer, printer)
participating in a computer network that
uses the Internet Protocol for
communication.
