LEADING VS. PERFORMANCE

WORSHIP PERFORMER

Pretends to have a
private worship life with
God
Lifts up self
Manipulates people
through virtual
worship
Consumed with
presenting a glittering
image
Fails to give spiritual
big picture

WORSHIP LEADER

Takes worship as a
lifestyle seriously
Lifts up God
Leads people to worship by
worshipping
Consumed with a passion
for God and integrity of
heart
Keeps Christ redemption at
the forefront; relates Gods
story to peoples own stories

Personal goal: maximum visibility

Draws attention to self
Clones his worhsip leading style
from popular christian songleaders
Inflexible with the worship order;
does everything according to plan
Searches for crowd approval
Disallows or interrupts silence
Dilikes giving up the microphone to
others; visibly depressed by
smaller crowds; goes through the
motions.

Personal goal: invisibility

Deflects attention from self
Allows God to fashion his own style
out of his unique personality, gifts
and experience.
Prepared, but sensitive to what God
is doing.
Stays in touch with people in order
to sense their needs
Lets go of control, allows God to
speak in the quiet, to deal with
peoples brokenness.
Mentors others in worship leading,
gives them opportunities to serve..
