VALVE SELECTION, DESIGN & MANUFACTURING:

In today's unpredictable economy, the

selection of valves can become monumental
task. For many, It was never easy to begin
with, especially when there are so many types
to choose from .This article will help facilitate
the basics of valve selection and give some
insight into what might be expected in future
valve selection.
For all practical purposed, a valve considered
as advice which stop starts or changes
direction or magnitude of fluid flows or its
pressure and temperature. This description in
itself is perhaps sufficient to explain some of
the reasons that make valve selection such an
arduous task, but let's ask ourselves five
basic question

Valve Technology

1- THE PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS OF VALVES STARTING

AND STOPPING FLOW
This is the service for which valves are most
generally usedstarting and stopping flow. Gate
valves are excellently suited for such service. Their
seating design, when open, permits fluid to move
through the valve in a straight line with minimum
restriction of flow and loss of pressure at the valve.
2- REGULATING OR THROTTLING FLOW
Regulating or throttling flow is done most
efficiently with globe or angle valves. Their seating
design causes a change in direction of flow through
the valve body, thereby increasing resistance to
flow at the valve. Globe and angle valve disc
construction permits closer regulation of flow.
These valves are seldom used in sizes above 12
inches, owing to the difficulty of opening and
closing the larger valves against pressure.

19 - Gate Valve Body Leakage

This 3/4" gate valve was the coldwater shutoff

valve to the water heater. The valve has been
weeping moisture through the brass body
material for an unknown period of time. The
corrosion formed is from the minerals in the
water depositing on the valve body. Moisture
leaks through to the surface of the brass material,
corrodes and seals. The moisture will again leak,
corrode and seal. This explains the ongoing build
up of corrosion on the material surface. This is a
typical pattern and may repeat itself many times
before total failure.

SELECTING A VALVE TYPE

When speaking of valves, it's easy to get lost in the

terminology. Valve types are used to describe the
mechanical characteristics and geometry (Ex/ gate, ball,
globe valves). We'll use valve control to refer to how
the valve travel or stroke (openness) relates to the flow:
1. Equal Percentage:
equal increments of valve travel produce an equal
percentage in flow
change
2. Linear:
valve travel is directly proportional to the valve
stoke
3. Quick opening:
large increase in flow with a small change in valve
stroke
So how do you decide which valve control to use?
Here are some rules of thumb for each one:

December 18,

COLLECTED BY EN

110

SELECTING A VALVE TYPE

1. Equal Percentage (most commonly used valve control)

a. Used in processes where large changes in pressure drop are
expected
b. Used in processes where a small percentage of the total
pressure drop
is permitted by the valve
c. Used in temperature and pressure control loops
2. Linear
a. Used in liquid level or flow loops
b. Used in systems where the pressure drop across the valve is
expected to
remain fairly constant (ie. steady state systems)
3. Quick Opening
a. Used for frequent on-off service
b. Used for processes where "instantly" large flow is needed
(ie. safety systems or cooling water systems)
Now that we've covered the various types of valve control, we'll
take a look at the most common valve types.

Another type of valve commonly used in
conjunction with other valves is called a check
valve. Check valves are designed to restrict the
flow to one direction. If the flow reverses
direction, the check valve closes. Relief valves
are used to regulate the operating pressure of
incompressible flow. Safety valves are used to
release excess pressure in gases or compressible
fluids.
