GENERAL RULES OF WORDS STRESSING

One word has only one stress

We can only stress vowels, not consonants.

Words of one syllable are generally unstressed,


if they are purely grammatical words like
pronouns, prepositions, etc.

All words of more than one syllable are


stressed.

WORD STRESS IN
ADJECTIVES
1. Two-Syllable Adjectives

In most two syllable nounsand adjectives, the first syllable takes


on the stress.
Two-syllable adjective words have stress on the second syllable if
that syllable has long vowels or diphthong, or if it ends with more
than one consonant.
Examples:
diVINE
coRREct
aLIVe
If the final syllable contains short vowel, and one (or no) final
consonant, the first syllable is stressed.
Examples:
RAIny
EVen
LOVely

2. Two-Syllable nouns
In most two syllablenounsandadjectives, the first
syllable takes on the stress. If the second syllable
contains a short vowel, the stress will usually come on
the first syllable. Otherwise it will be on the second.
Examples:

3. Two-Syllable verbs and prepositions
In most two syllable verbsandprepositions, the stress
ison the second syllable.

4. Three-Syllable words

For Verbs, if the last syllable contains a short vowel and


ends with not more than one consonant, that syllable
will be unstressed, and stress will be placed on the
preceding (penultimate)syllable.
Examples:

deTERmine
if the final syllable contains a long vowel or diphthong,
or ends with more than one consonant, that final
syllable will be stressed
Examples:
enterTAIn
resuRRECT

WORD STRESS IN THREE-SYLLABLE


NOUNS
For Nouns, if the final syllable contains a short vowel or , it
is unstressed, if the syllable preceding this final syllable contains a
long vowel or diphthong, or if it ends with more than one
consonant, that middle syllable will be stressed.

Examples:

miMOsa

poTAto

diSAster

syNOPsis
If the final syllable contains a short vowel and the middle
syllable contains a short vowel and ends with not more than one
consonant, both final and middle syllables are unstressed and the
first syllable is stressed.

5. Words ending in er,ly
For words ending with the
suffixeserorly, the stress is placed on
the first syllable.

If there is a word that ends in aconsonantorin
ay, then the first syllable gets the stress.

7. Words ending in ee, ese, ique, ette
Words that use the
suffixee,ese,eer,iqueorette, have the primary
stress actually placed on the suffix.
This applies to wordsof all syllable lengths.
Examples:

eer:sightsEER, puppetEER
ese:SiamESE, JapanESE, cheESE
ette:cassETTE, CorvETTE, towelETTE
ique:unIQUE, physIQUE

8. Stress on the second from the

You put stress on the second syllable
from the end of the word, with words
ending inic,sionandtion.
Examples:

Stress on the third from end syllable


9. Stress on the third from end syllable
You put stress on the third from end syllable with words that
end incy,ty,phy,gyandal.
Examples:
deMOCracy
TREAty
geOGraphy
ALlergy
NAUtical
If the number is a multiple of ten, the stress is placed on the
first syllable.
Examples:
TEN

ONEhundred
