What is Kana:
Before I start teaching you the Kana
characters, you need to know what it is.
Kana is Hiragana and Katakana which are
the Japanese alphabets.
Kanji is also a Japanese alphabet but Ill
come on to that later.
Kana is technically not an alphabet its a
syllabry
It is a collection of phonic sounds. There
are 46 sounds in Hiragana and Katakana.

Pronunciation Notes:
Through out this PowerPoint you may have
noticed the double vowels and
consonants.
Its important to recognise this because if
you forget to have a double vowel or
consonant when you need one you could
change the meaning of the word.
The rules of double vowels and
consonants dont matter so much in
Romaji but they do in Hiragana and
Katakanana
over
so its i-adjecives

Pronunciation Notes:
When you have an o and a u together,
with the o first, you get a long vowel
sound.
This is the same with e and i. If the e
is first you get a long vowel sound.
With the other vowels you just get long
vowels when it has the same vowel twice.
In Hiragana, when you have a long
consonant sound you put a small tsu
before it but well go over that in more

in
a
